Did the road FROM Hana in August. Absolutely beautiful, flowers, vegetation, waterfalls, nice sunny day (not a drop of rain!). Start your trip early and drive straight to Hana (we drove all the way to Ohe'O Gulch, so worth it!!) and then work your way back. Definitely do the hike through the bamboo forest to the waterfall (not in flip-flops!... more

We left Kihei at 7:30am. Got back at like 8pm. Long day. And of course, some of it got old and some of it was not that great. But just follow the "Gems" in the Maui Revealed book and its greatness. Above all, the Venus Pool is the best. I am a weak swimmer, but still got the guts to... more

I read many reviews about Hana before attempting it myself. I'd say if it's your first time going. You HAVE to try it just once, so that you can say you've experienced it. I went with my husband in May 2008. We were on a cruise, and rented a car to drive here. It wasn't really difficult b/c the navigation... more

The road to Hana was such a great and enjoyable drive. We drove a Blazer and still enjoyed the drive. It would have been much better though in a convertible. The views are amazing, but don't be fooled by the advertisements about the hundred's of waterfalls. We took the slow drive yesterday and stopped at every single spot to find... more

Drive the first half. Don't waste your time doing the whole thing because the traffic is bad. The road isn't good and if it rains it gets flooded. The stops we read about in the Maui Revealed were full of bugs and mud and there was no parking and signs for keep out. You came to Maui to getaway to... more

The road to Hana was not impressive. Aside from a few waterfalls and the Seven Pools, there was not much to see. The tour with Valley Isle Excursion was awful. The driver guide was entertaining on the way to Hana but he rarely made any stops. The advertising about 4 hours of stop time is bogus. Also, the advert says... more

If you must take the ride to Hana you must: rent a sports car, you will need something that handles better than a corolla; stay the night and come back the next day because the ride is beautiful but exhausting; watch for falling coconuts-they can smash through a car windshield; take the walk into the waterfall at the end of... more

Everyone must drive the road to Hana at least once! Even though it is only 50+ miles from the central part of the island, start your day early as it truly is a day trip. If possible, get an audio CD to listen to as you make the drive - it will tell you a lot of nice tips/pointers and... more

The Road to Hana was pretty amazing. The scenery was very lush and the waterfalls were beautiful! But there are two things that you have to watch out for; locals and highway closures. Many tourists drive this route in a careful and slow manner. A young local boy was not too happy with this and started to tailgate many of... more

Every time I go to Maui, I make a point of experiencing the Hana Highway. I go the back way, starting with the winery, then I have the western part of the highway to myself. Note, if you are driving a rental, you most likely agreed NOT to take your car on this unpaved stretch. That said, although it is... more
