Conveniently located in downtown Ottawa just a short walk from Parliament Hill, this hotel offers decent accommodations at a reasonable price. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building for a fee.
2. Watch Parade from Gatineau Park
Located right on the Canada Day Parade route along Elgin Street, this park provides the perfect spot to perch and watch the antics of the grand procession as it passes. Go early and stake out a good spot!
After the parade a great place to spend your early afternoon is the Byward Market, a farmer’s market in the downtown area featuring plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and of course Canada’s famous maple syrup. On Canada Day you are likely to see lively street performers or make friends here with total strangers. There are plenty of places around to pick up a quick bite to eat or something to drink.
4. Canada and the World Pavilion at Rideau Falls Park
Celebrating the diversity of Canada’s many cultures, this pavilion hosts exhibits, activities, performances and workshops throughout Canada Day. It is located in the beautiful Rideau Falls Park, whose magnificent waterfalls provide a gorgeous backdrop to the pavilion.
5. Tour Rideau Hall
This home of Canada’s Governor General offers public tours of both the historic mansion and the surrounding grounds. Learn some of Canada’s history as you enjoy the peace of the lovely gardens and recreational areas of the property.
Parliament Hill, of course, is host to the main events of the day. The stages set up on the hill before Canada’s majestic, gothic-styled Parliament Buildings host numerous popular Canadian musical acts and speakers throughout the day, including the Prime Minister and Governor General of Canada. The party is enormous, the crowds intense and exciting.
7. Watch Fireworks from Jacques-Cartier Park
To cap off the day, watching the fireworks over the Ottawa River is always beautiful and breathtaking. There are a number of great locations from which to view the spectacular show, but one of my favorites is Jacques-Cartier Park, where you can see everything clearly.
