Today Hong Kong, which became a possesion of the People's Republic of China in 1997, remains a central trading port and its bustling night life makes it a popular spot for tourists in Asia.
2. India
The Civil Disobedience movement in India was certainly instrumental in the eventual unravelling of the empire, if not the main cause, as India was an extremely important geo-political colony to the British. Today India feautres a wide variety of landscapes and cultural experiences.
3. The Thirteen Colonies
Okay, let's see if I can do this without looking at Wikipedia: 1) New York, 2) New Hampshire, 3) Massachusetts, 4) Rhode Island, 5) Connecticut, 6) Pennsylvania, 7) New Jersey, 8) Maryland, 9) Delaware, 10) Virginia, 11) North Carolina, 12) South Carolina, 13) Georgia. (Alright, I did check with Wikipedia, I had Vermont instead of New York originally, close though). For obvious reasons, each of these states has rich historical heritage in the formation of the USA. You'll find great Revolutionary War history in each, such as the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA and Fanueil Hall in Boston, MA.
Australia was started as a British penal colony in 1788 (I could think of worse places to go if I were a criminal!). Today Australia is a country full of natural beauty and great culture and it is no wonder that tourists flock here in droves.
When you think of Jamaica today, the last thing that comes to the mind of the average tourist is the British Empire, until you notice the cars driving on the left side of the road. Jamaica today is a haven for spring breakers looking to replicate the lifestyle of Bob Marley and relax on the idyllic beaches.
6. British Virgin Islands
Every one of the BVI is as beautiful as the next. You will not find it very hard to relax here.
7. Eretz Yisrael/Palestine
Not really part of the empire, but this hotly disputed territory was under British mandate from 1920 until 1948, when Israel became its own independent state. I don't want to get into the politics of it because in truth I don't know anything about it and most outsider "pundits" on the subject probably don't know anything about it either. All that aside, Israel is a beautiful country with incredibly rich geographical and religious history.
Along with Jamaica, Barbados is one of Britain's former colonies that has become a hot spot for spring breakers and others who yearn for tropical climates.
9. Singapore
Singapore was a major source of revenue for the British East India Company during colonial times. Today it is one of southeast Asia's most bustling countries, with its great hotels and nightlife attracting many foreign visitors.
10. Egypt
Benjamin Disraeli's conservative government was responsible for buying the Suez Canal in 1875. Egypt today is most visited by tourists for the Pyramids of Giza, while the Red Sea and the city of Sharm-el Sheikh also attracts a lot of vacartioners.
11. United Kingdom
