My wife and I stayed at Chumbe Island for three days during August 2008 in a Zanzibar trip and would surely have stayed more if availability would have allowed. The island is in a fantastic location in a protected marine park. The reef is great and gives you the chance for spectacular snorkelling. Only in Australia we’ve seen more varied... more

If you are a young stary-eyed couple or on honeymoon or a tree-hugger this is the place for you. If you are older and have been around a bit and can see through the eco-bit it isn't. The place is tired after 10 years and in a desperate need of a re-vamp. They are taking top dollar and putting little... more

We arranged to visit Chumbe at the end of a 2 week safari in July to unwind and reflect. It certainly met that objective though it was a culture shock after the luxury of some of the safari lodges. The good points are well established, great staff, terrific reef, fascinating lodges, good food although there's not a lot of variety... more

This is truly a slice of heaven. The views alone are georgious, but when you get to the huts and see how ingeniously they are made, and consider how little impact you are having on the enviornment by staying there, you can't help but just feel happy. We had come from safari on the northern circuit and were travelling with... more

We could only manage to get a one night stay at Chumbe Island during our trip to Zanzibar but we grabbed it with both hands because we knew it would be something we had never experienced before-we live in Dubai where ‘eco-friendly’ is a rarely used term-because of the heat you have no option but to drive, because of safety... more

Before going to Tanzania we had read all the reviews on tripadvisor about Chumbe Island. This had heightened our expectations and I was afraid I might be let down. But nothing could have prepared us for the amazing experience of Chumbe which is so friendly, warm and refreshing that none of the people we met there wanted to leave that... more

Go see Chumbe for what it is, an outstanding example of true eco- tourism. I'm rating it five stars as an eco-tourism educational experience. As a hotel and a honeymoon vacation destination, it was OK. The island is beautiful. The bungalows architecture is fascinating--we even had a bird nesting in ours. The way the center collects and stores rainwater, fascinating.... more

This place is true piece of heaven. My wife and I started a one month honeymoon in Tanzania here and, as great as the rest of the country was, nothing really compared to Chumbe. The staff is genuinely kind, caring, and attentive and the location can't be beat. Everything is serene and peaceful. We were lucky and the other people... more

This is a perfect eco-resort--a real eco-resort that goes to extreme lengths to maintain and preserve the coral island and park. If the idea of a composting toilet disgusts you, you will not enjoy this island. If you need a full-blast hot shower, luxury linens and a lot of privacy, you should try some place else. If, however, you like... more

We were lucky enough to spend 5 nights on this beatiful island over the Christmas holiday. It has all been said before by previous reviwers , tim spent here is unforgettable. We were surpised by how pretty this island itself was , the small beach with lovely huts , hammocks etc was just perfect for the 14 guests. Also, just... more
