Fun Tropicale Beach Resort

BOOKING AND FLIGHT
stayed at the fun tropicale in playa dorada from the 27th june - 11th july. booked with hays travel, flew with monarch from newcastle. wasnt impressed with flight, as previously on long haul we have had seats with tv's in back, monarch were just little drop down ones spaced down middle of plane, i couldnt see at all on way there, but there wasnt much on anyway. food was 'ok'.

TRANSFER
took about 15 mins transfer from airport to hotel. passed through airport and bags were retrieved reasonably quickly. buses were ready and waiting, and had cool boxes full of water. the fun tropicale was the first drop off.

CHECK IN
on arrival, it took a reasonable amount of time to get checked in, you get given a map of the hotel, but they didnt tell us where our room was, eventually a bell boy came and helped us, in exchange for a tip of course, the guy who dragged the cases off the bus even asked for a tip.

ROOM
eventually got to the room (D block, top floor) - we had requested on booking a high floor room (less bugs, generally quieter) with a balcony, and we got just that. the balcony was covered tho, so no sun, and viewed right into another hotel which was a shame. our room had one very large bed, tv, storage, bathroom and fridge. the fridge had a huge bottle water in which was replaced when it ran out, and we bought a couple of bottles of pop which we got refilled at the bar and kept in there. i have heard its pot luck if you get a fridge or not, so try requesting as you book. the room was pretty basic, but did its job and was clean. we also found it a tad dark, with only 2 small lamps near the bed, a small light at the door, then 2 uplighters in the room that were less than useless. the water went off a few times, but this was never for more than a few mins, so we simply left the tap on in the sink so we could hear when it came back on. we always had hot water, after we figured out that the tap with the blue rim in the bath was actually the hot tap. we hired the safe for $40, but often left nintendo ds, phones, and small change out, none of which were touched. we always had plenty of toilet roll.

OVERVIEW OF HOTEL
after reading the layout of the hotel, fun royale and tropicale, i was half expecting 2 seperate sites, but you could use both, this isnt the case, it is one hotel, and the only difference between royale and tropicale is the room you get. the hotel has 3 pools, 3 bars, buffet restaurant, 2 alacartes and a pizza place. it has a further bar and eatery at the beach. its not as big as hotels i have been to previously. there are plenty of activites day and night. the grounds are well kept and very clean. loads of sun loungers, we were never out of choice. there are plenty of birds including numerous peacocks, and one or two cats, which we found generally kept themselves to themselves. the place get very busy of 'locals' at the weekend, which we found abit much, as they were in huge groups everywhere, and werent very good at queing. there was a tractor and trailer to the beach, which comes every 15mins or so, although its only a 5-10 min walk away. the beach is ok, not the best, and no parasols, and you get quite hassled by people selling things and the hair braiding ladies. we tried the snorkelling, but the water was abut murky and we didnt see any fish, and the kayaking, which was abit dodgy, and very unsteady.

POOLS
3 pools, main one right next to reception in the heart of the complex, we found this too much, all the activites happened here, but the pool was generally full to bursting and full of extremely noisy (mainly latino) kids. the kiddies pool was right next to the brazilian restaurant, and was very peaceful and quiet, only place where there was yellow loungers that didnt burn you! although you do have to walk to main pool to get a drink. the last pool was the adults pool which was near the buffet restaurant and the 24hr bar. which was also nice and peaceful and quiet, although a few kids did creep in from time to time, they were well behaved. the pools were cleaned at least twice a day, but the adult pool was surrounded by trees and bushes, so did get dirty quite quickly.

BARS
the main bar is next to the main pool and theatre, serves plenty of cocktails and spirits. theres another swim up bar in the pool, and the 24hr bar was near the buffet restaurant. we found the 24hr one the best, and the staff are really brilliant, if you are just sitting at the bar, if you are nearly empty they get you another one right away. i highly recommend the banana mammas. its a lovely pink slush, and can be alcoholic or non. there is also a small bar down at the beach.

RESTAURANTS/FOOD
main buffet restaurant we found quite repetitive, and not too nice. the pasta was ok, and was made with the ingredients you wanted (i generally opted for bolognese sauce, mushrooms and garlic) there is always plenty of meats, not too much vegetarian choice, but there is always rice, chips and some form on potato. there is always soup, meats, cheese, salads, fruits and bread although i found this dry. the desserts werent to my liking, and the ice cream freezer door was often left open by guests, which resulted in it turning to slop. a polite note asking it to be kept closed wouldnt go a miss. there is a jug of water on the table, but you generally have to ask for a drink, or go get it yourself. the italian alacarte was ok. first visit i had seafood salad (which was horrible, and not as expected, unidentifieable fish, rubbery and very vinegary) and the special, spinach and ricotta canneloni for main, which was all spinach no ricotta. my boyfriend had the seasoned beef for starter which was raw, and alfredo pasta for main which he enyoyed. there is also a salad table which has lovely smoked salmon. the second visit we both had mushrooms for starter which were lovely, although you only got 3 tiny things, i had lasagne for main, which was dry and rubbery, my boyfriend had the seabass which he said was ok. you get a glass of extremely sweet sparking wine as a 'welcome drink', water, and the offer of wine. if you accept the wine you will have to ask if you want any other drink, if you decline, you will be asked if you want a drink from the bar. the brazilian is a bbq type of thing, salad bar starter same as in buffet restaurant, then for main they put chips and rice on your table and proceed to come rouns with different meats on skewers (sausage, chicken, pork, beef). we found the service very slow, they could have done with more than one person serving meats, instead of 3 or 4 wandering round topping up water. same with drinks as italian, only the 'welcome drink' was a lemony cocktail. we found the pizza place the best, only open from 12 - 5 though, and people start queing up from 11.45. the chef just prepares what he feels like (ham, pepperoni, cheese, cheese and tom, pepper) pops it in a hot cupboard thing, and you take slices of what you fancy. the food at the beach was also good, really nice chicken, and the best chips, also has fish, salad, burgers and hot dogs.

ACTIVITES
although we didnt bother with any of the activites there was always something going on. the night time shows were abit dodgy tho. there is also plenty to do, football, volleyball, table tennis, pool, mini golf, tennis, shuffleboard, dominoes, bikes

PLAYA DORADA IN GENERAL
its a nice place, and its nice to be able to go out and about for walks without fear of being in danger. its about a 15 min walk to the plaza, which is quite large, but alot of the shops sell the same stuff. some shops have fixed prices, others you have to haggle, we found upstairs generally better and cheaper. there is a cinema there, but we didnt know if it was spanish or english, a pizza hut, two steakhouses and an english sports bar, also places selling trips alot cheaper than via the reps at the hotel, and money exchange (33 RD pesos to $1 while we were there) pesos and dollars are generally accepeted pretty much everywhere, although in the plaza shops displayed prices are usually in pesos, besides the trips and restaurants where its $. if you walk round you will get hassled quite abit for taxis and horse and carts, if you pilitely but firmly decline and say your just out for a walk, they generally leave you alone. you also get hassled by the vacation club people from the occidental, we were advised to steer clear of these, as my parents were here a vew year back and they were roped into this, asked thier hotel and room number, and while they were being talked to, very strangely thier room was broken into (at the victoria hotel), could have been a coincidence, but maybe not. you will get asked if you want to go to the flea market, this sells exactly the same stuff as the plaza, and we found it more expensive, it isnt a nice experience, as you get pretty much dragged into one shop, where they try to rip you off, and are very persuasive to try and make you buy something before leaving, they also are very good at standing thier ground with the price they want. another person will be waiting outside of this shop to drag you into thier shop, which sells exactly the same stuff (mainly jewellry, canvases, wooden stuff, photo books, and other bits and peices). i would only advise going here if you are a very good, confident haggler.

TRIPS
we did 3 trips, dominican discovery mega trucks, paradise island, and ocean world with the sealion experience. the dominican discovery was a full day on a monster truck seeing the sites of the local area. you do about 20min horseriding, some time at the beach, drive through a few villages where you can give local kids sweets, paper, pens etc. you also stop to look around a families house, a place where they make cigars, and mamajuana (an aphrodisiac) where you can try both for free, a place where they carve wooden sculptures, a coffee and chocolate making place where you can buy (we paid 150 pesos, for a big lump of chocolate, and a package of coffee) and also a place with a huge bull which you can sit on. there is also usually a school stop, but it was closed for the holidays while we were there. lunch was included, and it was ok, but very little choice, and drinks were included all day (pop, water, rum, lager - bottles of brahma). was a good trip and worth the money. pleasure island was about the same amount as the discovery, but i thought less value for money. very early pick up (6.20) and a long transfer (hour n half ish) then you go by speedboat to the island, takes about 20min, and a bit dodgy if you dont like boats, as feels unsteady, very bumpy and you get wet. the island is basically a sand bank, it has very little shade, and 2 huts belonged to our trip. one for really horrible dry sandwiches, fruit and drinks, and the other for snorkelling gear. its quite small, and gets very very crowded, not my idea of paradise. the snokeling was nice, loads of lovely fishes, but again very crowded, they take you out in big groups, and you keep getting kicked by other people. you can go in the area designated for swimming on your own, but not outside it without a guide, due to the delicate coral. we were getting the sandwiches and taking them to feed to the fish, this was really good. you are here for about 2.5hrs, which i found got abit boring. then back on the $12 for all you can eat buffet, but we opted for cheeseburger and chips for $7. there is also loads of other stuff like pizzas to choose from. all the prices are in dollars, but the exchange rate here was 31 pesos compared the the 33 elsewhere, so when paying in pesos here we got a better deal. finally we did go karting, which you get at the towel place, this was $20 per person for as long and you wanted, and included a taxi there and back. there is 4 things, go karts on a big track, another type on a small circuit, kiddies car things, and some odd bumper things that go in circles. lads - the guys there will ask you if you want to go fast, if so they take an inhibitor out, they will ask for a tip, but tell they you will see them before you go. ladies and kids, they wont bother with, and if you want to go fast, you may have to ask.

thats the lot, if theres anything you want to know feel free to email me at atarisleaalk3@gmail.com

“Best Holiday so far”

I have jsut got bk from my all inlusive two weeks at the Fun Tropicale in the Dominical Republic and have not a bad work to say about it.

It has somthing for everyone and the staff work amazingly hard to keep you entertained throuhgout your stay.

There are 3 swimming one soley for Adults with no activites so if you are some piece you can. this is next to teh 24 hr bar. There is also the main pool this pool has the best atmosphere with the animation team workin and organising games for all, all day long, and then the dancers start at 2.30 and join in all the fun. BINGO, Darts, Footbal, waterpoolo vollyball and all other sorts of crazy fun things for people of all ages to join in. The 'Animation team' as the call them selves also work throughout the night in the show with the dancers and awarding certificates to all teh winners from the day. they make your stay more fun and interesting. One day i was ill any several\ off them took time out to spend time with me and provide me with herbal remerdies that would help my stomach, these worked.

The food is amazing in the two restaurants, jsut make sure you read the menu properly and the buffett has something for everyone.
Food can also be got in the middle of the night, if your feeling hungry.

Hosue keeping clean your room and linen everyday unless asked not too and do a very good job.

Everyone is so lovely. The weather helps, but even when it rains, ppl still just carry on as it soon passes and is dry again.

Not one member of staff walked past witouu saying Holla to me and its things like that, that make the holiday.

I would recommed this hotel to anyone.

“'Hells Bells' Hotel out of the Carry On Film”

Fun Tropicale Beach Resort

If you are looking for pure luxery, relaxation and the slightest bit of elegence this is not the Hotel to be in. TOTAL DISAPOINTMENT.

Beware of your first night and that you are not given a room with electricity generator in... we did, had no sleep and then changed rooms to a balcony door that didn't close properly.

We had no water for a whole day in the room, with ancient furniture. Building work going on around the pool which was completely dodgy. Pool was dirty with chlorine levels through the roof. NOT SAFE TO SWIM IN.

Hotel food "buffet" was the same every night, unless you eat rice your stuck!! No waitor service what so ever, really shocking.. you have to get a drink from the bar before you eat!!

Once you have finised eating.. you can relax by the pool sitting on the sunbeds to watch the entertainment which consisted of watching the builders knock down a wall. :)) Unless you wanted to sit in working mens club entertainment.
The beach was the only nice part of this hotel which was a 10 minute walk away.

Trip to Ocean World was amazing and highly recommended but be careful as the Reps from Thomas Cook are totally useless.
We paid for a dolphin & Shark swim, however the rep didn't give us a ticket and we couldn't do a shark swim. So check your tickets.

The Dominican Republic is a gorgeous place to visit just a shame we had such a dreadfull hotel which was like some thing out of a carry on film "Hells Bells"

“An honest review from an ex holiday rep”

Fun Tropicale Beach Resort

5 of 5 stars
west yorkshire
Jun 21, 2008
4/5 found this review helpful

An honest report from an ex holiday rep...please read....

Me and my boyfriend stayed here from 3-17th June. It was FAB!

Hopefully i will give you as much information as possible as after reading other reviews i was myself quite worried about going.

The outbound flight took 8hrs 47mins and was adeqaute. A little warning- due to us arriving later than everyone else at Manchester we had to sit behind each other as we hadn't booked seats. I believe it costs around £10 each however worth it at least you can sleep slumped next to each other.

I was very impressed by the flight- from May this year thomas cook have increased leg room in their long haul flights and this did make a difference. The in flight entertainment was good and the food was actually very impressive (you do in fact get fed twice for those who didn't know!

Buying drinks is expensive- 80p for a MINIATURE pepsi or sprite and £3 for a 300ml Heineken beer so you are better buying soft drink from whsmiths inside the airport to take on the plane.

Transfere from the airport wasn't even 20 mins and when we got to the hotel they were very happy and helpful.

Now this is a little gem of information; not sure if it will work but worth a try. Prior to going i had read reports that it was luck as to whether you get a room with a fridge that is topped up daily with soft drink and water- think i figured out why. WHEN YOU CHECK IN the hotel staff will ask you if you have been before- if you say no they will give you a green wrist band- try out saying yes you have a few years ago because they will give you a pink band (sorry guys) but after some invegigative work and speaking to a couple who had returned after 10 years they had pink bands and their fridges were topped up daily- try it out and please let me know if this works!! This would certainly help you because in the rooms without this facility you will recieve a fridge and a bottle of water that they will top up for you but no kettle- so when you wake up in the night or first thing dying for a drink you will have to walk round to the buffet area for a drink.
The rooms are fine. they are clean enoughand the beds are huge! Hey you've not paid for 5 star after all and you do only sleep there and i certainly has no problem with the room (other than no kettle)

BEWARE of the staff in white tops with VIP SERVICES written on them hanging around the path by the buffet area- they are there to sell you time ahare and will start by asking you if you woud like a red band... just say no thanks. They caught us the first morning and we said no- the same guy bothered us a few times thoughtout our stay saying he worked form commision for how many people he takes upsatirs for a presentation- but i explained we were on holiday and simply didn't want to sit upsatirs for an hour when we could be by the pool.

FOOD
The food unfortunately is not the best (and i honestly am not a fussy eater) They add tonnes of sugar to almost everything- they are one the biggest places for exporting sugar and the dominican people love sugar) however i didn't starve- they is always something for you to eat even if it does get repetative.

We weren;t told until our welcome meeting that you can only book into the brazilian and italian restaruants once per week per restaraunt. We got round this by making reservations with a couple we met and used to book for 4 people on each room. The Italian is very nice- the Brazilian is okay- lots of meat that is very over cooked. My advice would be to take some money so you can go out and eat at the Plaza a couple of times. They have Hemmingways and Roadways which are american style bars with American style food. The prices are probably just about what you'd pay in the UK but it is definatley worth it when you are fed up of the food. We got 2 beers and a shareable portion of fajitas in hemingways with fries for $23.

Oh- and there is a British bar called PHILLIPS in the plaza (playing the euros 08 matches whilst we were their too) where you can get a budweiser and a decent cider!

The Resort
The resort is a man made resort with 14 hotels purposly built around a golf course. There is barriers either end of the resort to prevent just anyone coming in. This is good in one sense- it is PERFECTLY safe for you leave the hotel and walk up to the plaza (10 mins) for drinks or shopping- EVEN AT NIGHT.

For me i was a little disappointed- i like to be out and about and see what the local area is all about... but you can definately manage to do this with the excuraions.

Now- the excuraions. Dont be folled into buying them from your rep- even after the morning you arrive when you are giddy and they say they is limited space. You NEED to walk up to the Plza and go upstairs to the little shop where they sell them- ask for Oscar or Alex (there is many people selling excursions in the Plaza, however these guys are the most proffesional and there isn't about 5 people who pounce on you from 1 shop. THY ARE FULLY INSURED- (CERTIFICATE ON THE DOOR) and i can 100% guarantee you will pay at least a third less on some trips and up to half on others.- and you can still haggle from this price!
For example- Ocean World and to swim with the dolphins at the hotel was $165- at this place someone got him down to $110. The mega trucks ride was $97 each form the hotel and our friends got it for $58 each! They work just the same- will come and pick you up form the hotel and bring you back.

We went on the River Rafting- it was awesome- highly recommended it cost around $65 from the plaza- we were picked up and taken 2 and a half hours drive up the mountains (amazing in itself as you get to see the real dominican- not just the man made resort- please perservere it was well worth it! given breakfast on arrive at the ranch a 3 hour white water rafting with true proffessionals and then given dinner before coming back to the hotel. you can buy a picture for $10 or they even film it but the dvd costs $35.

The next trip we went on was the puerto plata day- full day- this was good- again gets you out of the resort and out into the real world- a cable car trip up the mountain- spectacular views but the best bit about this trip was going to Sosua. This beach is beatiul- has a flea market down the side and is exactly what i imagined where we were stopping to be like- i wish we'd have booked their- but hey! you can also get to sosua doing the snorkelling trip- definately go it is fab.

The last trip we went on was the Jeep Safari- this was on par with the water rafting. we paid $36 each as opposed to $85 from the hotel . Here you get picked up- taken throught the jungle in the mountains- see a plantation, visit a woman who makes pure coffee, see a cock fight but the best bit was the waterfalls....There is 28 waterfalls altogther all naturally formed and you cave through them with a proffessional team who have to pull you up the waterfalls- but you slide down them like water slides- truly amazing. Unfortuantely on the feep safari you only get time to do 7 of the 28. but did take around 2 hours to get through.I can guarantee this trip is awesome- if you are going to do one trip- do this. The waterfalls made me want to go back to the resort again next year just so i could explore all 28!

We were silly and paid for quad bikes through a dutch guy at the hotel- $95 for a 3 hour ride. Again you get this for $60 at the plaza and they are better bikes. It is a great trip though, you are led through mud so end up very dirty and was great fun.

The Beach
The hotel runs a tractor service all day to and from the beach- even though it is only a 5 min walk away. All inclusive continues at the beach- head down there for your lunch buffet as it is far better cooked and a lot nicer than at the hotel.

You can get on the banana boat for $10- my only problem with the beach was that there is no parasols for you to sit under- so when it is ridiculously hot you cannot get away form it. Also the 'looki looki' men pester you all the time trying to get you to but something- they constantly say you english you rich- again just say no politely and put your head down.

The staff at the hotel have sundays off so there is a beach party every sunday- good for messing around and been silly (beware boys for the drinking games!) and they light a bonfire at the end- very quaint!

The animation staff at the hotel are crazy- good crazy, they are up and dancing all day and night and alwys putting little activiteis on during the day- water volley ball, dart balloons etc... they really are friendly and if you have kids are brilliant with them.

The pools
The pools are clean and large enough- there is an adults only pool around the 24 hour bar with is definatley a lot quiter if you prefere that. However the main pool has a bar in the middle of it and even though kids are in there did not cause us any stress.

Weekends:
At the weekends the hotels sells out any extra rooms to the local people. this can be a bit of a pain beacuse they just all of a sudden seem to descend upon the pools and buffets and they come in large groups- there was no problem with them at all and if you do talk to them they are in fact very friendly- however i am aware of the fact that a few people felt a bit intimidated at first.

overall a fantastic holiday for all- families, older copule and younger alike.

Enjoy you stay and if you want me to answer anything- just ask i would be happy to.
