O.K., here’s my take on our 7 night stay at EdenH, June 12 - June 19, 2008. It was me, my wife and another couple. We pretty much swept through the Punta Cana Airport and customs, off to the transfer and at the resort before we could blink. The resort was much more beautiful than what you can get from the pictures, and my first impression can basically be summed up by “Wow!”
We were VIP, so we checked in at the VIP check in. The staff in there was swift, courteous and very professional. PC Mike greeted and welcomed us and was very gracious. He had noticed prior to our arrival that day that there was some issue with our booking via Funjet, (somehow, it was shown as cancelled) but thanks to a post I made to Tripadvisor on our layover in Miami, PC Mike had noticed my post and knew I was on my way, and fixed everything before we got there. Exemplary customer service. I don’t remember her name, but the lady that helped us check in at the VIP lounge was terrific.
Within minutes, our bags were loaded and we were headed off to our rooms, guided by Rami, a great and personable guy whom always remembered us throughout our stay and always greeted us with a smile, handshake and “How are you.”
Our room was perfectly fine, next to our friends with a great ocean view, however, their room had a much larger balcony and ocean view and ocean front view (the last Paradise Club rooms closest to the ocean), and so I went to kindly ask if there was a similar room available at any time during our trip, and there happened to be one just like it available that day, so we moved to it. These rooms are great and the balcony views are tremendous. Again, the lady at the VIP check in shined with her courteousness and helpfulness.
We went down to the VIP pool bar next to building 2 and were greeted with Ramone’s enthusiasm that is second to none. Ramone made us feel at home instantly and was quick with drinks and personal service that I have not experienced in any of my previous travels. We spent most of our vacation at this pool and bar, mostly due in part to enjoying Ramone’s service, energy and fun personality. He made sure to take care of us the whole trip and making sure we always had a drink and were having fun. By the way, I did spend a short time at the other VIP pool bar and Carlos was also exceptional with his service and enthusiasm. I don’t think you can go wrong at either bar!
The beach is also beautiful and amazing. I spent a couple of mornings jogging each way down the beach and agree with other reviews that EdenH has the prime beach location. By the way, there were tons of chairs available all day at all of the pools and the beach. And I don’t mean just a few chairs, but a lot. There were also many, many palapa style umbrellas at the beach available all day long, so at least during our stay, the availability of a chair anywhere is a complete non issue.
As for the food, I enjoyed everything. For breakfast, we ate every morning at the buffet. I was sure to enjoy an omelette from Felix every day. It is true, he has an amazing gift of memory. He seems to remember details about almost everyone, your name, favorite sports team, where you are from, etc. He remembered me each day. He also remembered how some people preferred their eggs cooked. Not to mention his gift of memory, but he was also very personable, trying to bring out a smile in everyone. Maybe it is just some people are not morning people, but while in line for the Felix omelette, I witnessed quite a few people who were short and appeared like they were just not happy. Felix would ask them how they are doing, and they would simply say “fine” and not engage in any more conversation, nor even break a smile, keeping their arms folded. I kept thinking to myself, you people are on vacation, what’s the matter with you. But maybe they just didn’t feel good, are not morning people, or whatever, but personally, I’m going to absolutely enjoy every minute I’m on vacation. Felix would make some more attempts to break through these people’s barrier, but often to no avail. There was quite a bit of variety to choose from, something to suit almost any taste. The smoothies were also delicious, and juices fresh. The buffet restaurant also had great lunch and dinner varieties, with dinner changing up each night for different themes. The pizza is delicious. I enjoyed all of the food I ate at the buffet restaurant. In addition, the beach area buffet grill has excellent chicken.
We ate at the Asian restaurant two times, once at the normal sit down table, and once at the hibachi. For both, the food was great. For the hibachi, it seemed that your best bet of getting to eat would be to get there early (around 6 pm) – they have a few different seatings available, so you may have to wait an hour or so for the hibachi like we did, but we just went and enjoyed a drink and enjoyed being on vacation.
We ate at the Senses, which is a more fancy, gourmet style restaurant. The food was good, but for us, we are not fancy food people, so it was our least favorite of the restaurants. However, for those accustomed to more fine, gourmet dining this may be a style they would prefer. Again, the food was good, just not my style or preference.
The Italian was also very good, but my favorite in addition to the Asian, was the American. The Jack Daniels Flank steak was right up there with some of the best steaks I have ever had. In summary, I thought the food was very, very good everywhere, and the variety was great. There was always something that I liked at any of the places.
As far as drinks, they did vary by bar and bartender, but if you didn’t like something, you didn’t have to drink it, just order something else. My favorites were Mamajuana, Dominican Sunrise, Dirty Monkey and Presidente beer. If I wasn’t sure what I wanted, Ramone at the VIP pool bar would be sure to give me one of his many Ramone specials to try.
The weather was great for the Friday beach party, and I tell you, they go all out for this. This is a great concept and really made for a memorable dinner. Words really can’t describe this properly, it is just something you have to experience, but it is just a great atmosphere to have dinner.
I went and played basketball one afternoon, and this story exemplifies to me how a certain experience can be viewed differently by different travelers. I went to guest services in the lobby and asked about playing basketball and was directed to the bellboy out front. Well, the bellboys had tennis equipment, but no basketball. The hunt was on. After waiting about ten minutes while a bell boy went inside, the bellboy drove me around to a couple of locations at the resort as he would be redirected somewhere else. This went on for about 20 minutes or so, leading me back inside the lobby to guest services with still no basketball. The lady (I don’t remember her name) got on the phone and finally found one somewhere after a few calls and told me they would be bringing one to the lobby soon. Continuously throughout, the staff apologized but also did not give up, wanting to be sure I ended up being able to play basketball. While waiting for the ball for another 15 minutes or so at guest services, I enjoyed a conversation with Alexander who was very knowledgeable about basketball and a very personable guy. Utimately, a ball arrived and after about an hour, I was playing basketball. I mention this story simply to illustrate that I could see how some travelers would have become very upset at this experience, however, I simply took from the experience the opportunity to meet some new staff on a more personal level. After that, Alexander always took the time to greet me and talk with me each morning. In other words, I’m glad it happened. I got to meet new people and enjoy some good conversation. I swam with the current, not against it. I stopped and smelled the roses and enjoyed the moment, and met some good people and had good conversation during the wait.
I enjoyed the opportunity to use the VIP computers. You could only use them for 15 minutes, but I thought that was a positive, and not a negative. First, it keeps people from hoarding the computers for hours at a time, and second, it keeps you from spending your vacation sitting at a computer. Remember, you are on vacation. Get out and enjoy the resort, the food, the pools, the beaches, etc.
All in all, I really have no complaints. I thought the staff was amazing throughout my stay, better than most of the staff we’ve encountered in our travels in Mexico. The food was consistently very good, with some meals being absolutely excellent, rivaling some of the best meals I’ve had, and there was always something I enjoyed. The resort was itself beautiful, with no expense spared. The pools and beach, great. Our room was fantastic. Our experience was fantastic. We met several fellow tripadvisor travelers as well as some new friends from Florida that were so much fun to be around. Simply a GREAT time.
You know, I read continuously reviews where people said they joked with others at the resort while on vacation about how bad the resort was. Well, in contrast, our group joked around about many of the complaints that we had read about, as we just didn’t even remotely see where the basis of the complaints came from. I’m not knocking those people, that’s their experience, I just don’t see it, and now I can say it and it mean something, because I’ve been there too.
Thank you EdenH and Staff!
