Well, I don't usually write reviews, but I am now planning a trip and relying heavily on your opinions, so I thought I should share my experience with you....
Ok, so we wanted the BEST place in Jamaica, because my (now husband) had never been outside the country, and is sort of picky about pools and beaches, but he teaches music, so we thought that Jamica would be fun. I had been to Jamaica 4 times before, and had NEVER had a bad time.... [I've stayed in Montego Bay, Runaway Bay, and at Hedonism III (of these places, Hedonism was (surprisingly) the best overall experience - big room, spa tub, IMMACULATELY clean, fun and good food... Yes, there was a stripper convention at the hotel sponsored by Playboy, but everyone was VERY well behaved and respectful of us "prudes," and the people who chose to be naked were very good looking... not the nightmare "fat guy on the trapeeze" that I had read about), but I digress...]
My exact words to my travel agent were "I want the nicest place there is for about $4000, including air." Our travel agent (Liberty Travel) said that "everybody loves Sandals..." and that "Negril has the most beautifil beach in Jamaica!" So Sandals Negril it was! We got to the airport and were given beer and drinks while we waited for our air conditioned coach. The ride was LONG. There was a "traffic jam" when emaciated cattle wandered onto the road. They took us to some litle rundown place where people tried to sell us stuff and there was a stray three-legged dog that kept coming up to us.... We know it is a poor country, so we make the most of it....
FINALLY, we get to our stop (the last one). It looked....nice. We walked in and were impressed by the pool and the breathtaking view of the ocean. BUT THEN.....
We checked in and were given a glass of champagne and asked to wait. So we waited. And waited. And waited.
Then finally, we got our room. It was a first floor walk out to beach. Ok, but we were SUPPOSED to have a "bungalow with concierge service." They said they would move us as soon as the room became available, but were asked to settle into the room they gave us, so we did. No problem. Then...
we saw the ants.
We complained that there were a whole lot of ants having a convention near the refrigerator in our room, and they said they would clean it up. Someone was there in about 10 minutes. While we were waiting, we looked around the room....
We noticed some sort of scary thing in our tub and a used (tampon??) in the trash bin. Couldn't they have at least emptied the trash?? They could not get rid of the rust colored stain in the tub, but they got rid of the other thing. The room was just SO used and abused that it showed....
They wiped down the counter, but....
the ants came back a few minutes later, and we could see the trail of them, coming down from the ceiling in a row...
When we called again, our "concierge" told us to relax... "The ants are your friends, mon. Be irie! Everyting's gonna be allright, mon! Have a drink!" We start to name the ants, and think about the party they are having at Sandals, Negril...
We tried to make the best of it. The view was great. The beach is beautiful. We loved the (three) hammocks---when we could get a seat in one... We had a good time at the Benihana type place. It did not SEEM full, yet there was still some problem getting us into the room we had paid for.....
The ants partied long into the night, together with the drunk people at the bar located steps outside of our door...
As we lay awake watching the ants, we wonder if they are having fun, or if they, too, are disappointed by Sandals.... We decided the ants were CLEARLY having a better time than us, and that they are NOT our friends....
The staff told us they would upgrade our room and get us into the room we paid for as SOON as they could.... and they did - on our THIRD night (we were only staying four!)
The most ridiculous thing about it was that they PRETENDED to be trying very hard to "make up" for their mistakes, and that they just needed a little while to get things straightened out. If they just said that they would not have the room until our last night, we would have tried to reach our travel agent or switch hotels, but they just kept leading us on. The hotel clearly was nowhere near capacity, yet, somehow, the room we had paid for was unavailable, and there was NOTHING they could do except tell is to "look at the beautify ocean..." (which of course, WAS really beautiful.)
They kept asking me what they could do to make me smile, and I would make suggestions "you can comp me a massage. you could send us to another property." But apparently, all of the massage therapists were booked, and it was too much of a hassle to get us to the newer property that had just opened. Really, they did NOTHING. We actually WALKED to beaches because they couldn't get us a cab and they told us that we the bus wasn't running that day. It really was RIDICULOUS.
The blended drinks were ok, but the glasses were sort of sticky, and TWO drinks we ordered had lipstick marks on them (not mine). The idea that they might not be clean STILL makes my skin crawl...
I guess a vacation is what you make of it, but sometimes, your surroundings just "break" your spirit....
On the third night (the night that they FINALLY moved us away from the ants) they did give me a (not good) cake and balloons (for my 35th birthday) and they put rose petals on my pillow, but after three days of REALLY BAD food (think of the worst college/hotel food service you can imagine...) and even worse treatment by the staff (that CLEARLY seemed to be giving us the run around), we had enough.
The manager would ask me "how are our friends doing today?" When she saw me, and I was pretty sure she was talking about the ants. "I am still working on getting you into that room, it's just going to be a little longer. Please, be patient, and I will take care of you." I STILL wonder what she meant. (It wasn't about tipping, either. We started off tipping EVERYONE, but stopped after the first night, and it made ABSOLUTELY no difference.
The best thing about "sandals" was going over to beaches, which was empty (two weeks before Christmas). Everyone there was GREAT, and the spa there was MUCH nicer. Sandals offered to transfer us there for our last night (even though it had taken them THREE DAYS to transfer us to the room we had paid for), but we had paid for the most expensive room at Sandals, and they would NOT refund any money to us, nor could they guarantee any better experience at Beaches. Instead, they offered to give us a "free night" -- when we came back... WHAT A SCAM!!
I may not sound like it, but I do have a high tolerance for pain, and I understand that you don't go to an all inclusive for 5 star dining, but I expected to be able to find SOMETHING I liked (I like food - I am NOT picky, but the food here was INEDIBLE. Like I said, I had been to Hedonism, and the french toast there was AMAZING. The hot burgers and fries at Beaches were MUCH better. At Sandals, EVERYTHING was just WAY below average).
On that fourth morning, we got up early and decided to cut our losses by going to the Ritz Carlton. We told the staff that we were done, and the manager said, well, why don't we just send you to our new property? We respectfully declined and hightailed it out of there.
We paid $500 for one night at the RItz (just about the same as what we had paid for Sandals), AND IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! Just like at Sandals, EVERYTHING was included, but it was not lame food service, it was EXCEPTIONAL. We had the best filet mignon I have ever had, we were treated like Royalty, and yes, our drinks were included -- AND they came in CLEAN glasses.... It was the best $500 we have ever spent! We even recieved TWO free spa treatments! It was AMAZING.
The beach was not as nice as Negril (the beach at the Ritz Rose Hall is particularly bad because of the way it is set up), but the pool and the "Ritz service" MORE than made up for the awful experience at Sandals, and the White Witch was GREAT. They even noticed it was my birthday, and everywhere I went, they said, "happy birthday!" It was just SO MUCH BETTER than Sandals that it is hard to believe they are comparably priced!
Maybe it's because we are from New York. Maybe we just are spoiled, but when you work hard for your money and you are deciding where to get a "great deal," BE CAREFUL. You do NOT always get what you pay for. (When we got home, Liberty Travel eventually refunded us $400 of the $3800 we actually paid for our trip, but even that was a hassle to obtain).
If you are going to Jamaica, I recommend the Ritz Carlton. Get the club floor or the "everything included" package and you will NEVER miss the all you can eat slop they serve at Sandals. I heard that moon palace is amazing, too, and you don't have to take the ridiculous bus ride to Negril.
I have a free night at Sandals, but I will NEVER go back!
