Last week I returned from several days at “Las Brisas” Hotel.
The accommodations and the service are ok, but not excellent. The view over Acapulco is impressive (esp. at night, when you do not see the high rises), and if you do not plan to leave the room and porch during your stay you should be ok.
Room service was decent when you stick to Mexican food (although a Guacamole without Cilantro was disappointing), but it took each time to the next day until the plates with leftovers, cutlery, napkins, etc. were removed.
Our package also included one “romantic dinner” at the Bellavista restaurant, the showplace eatery of the hotel. After being seated, we reviewed the menu, and were excited about the mouthwatering selection. We made our choices and waited to order. The hostess appeared, took the menus to our surprise away and said “You have the wrong menus!”, as if we grabbed the menus somewhere ourselves. The new menu was a shadow of the first one, but we ordered chicken and salmon for main courses, some appetizers and desserts. Sadly the food was mediocre and overcooked. Before the food arrived, we had planned about returning another night and order from the “real menu”, but in the light of these offerings that would have been a mistake. The bread was good, though.
Many rooms have their own “pool” which is more like a large tub. Two strokes and you are at the other end. When I remembered that this is honeymoon central, I preferred to take just cooling showers instead of thinking what had happened in the pool before. Sadly there is no real beach. A “beach club” can be reached by shuttle bus which leaves every 20 minutes, but we did not bother to go, knowing that there is no real beach.
Acapulco itself is rather dingy, noisy and polluted (especially when you use an open Jeep). 60 years ago it must have been an enchanting spot, but now there is one high rise building at the beachfront to the next and behind it you find the main street, where Pizza Hut, Wal-Mart, Subway and establishments of similar class enchant the visitor.
Our hotel package included a Jeep rental. I had read on Tripadvisor before, that other guests using the hotel Jeeps were squeezed for bribes by the police. I mentioned this to the person who handed the car to me, and he said that they have a letter prepared for that purpose. It is basically a letter in Spanish addressed to the authorities, asking that the dear tourists should not be harassed, and if there is a problem, they should call the hotel directly.
The rental cars from the hotel are all Jeeps, and they have a distinctive white-pink paintjob, which makes them easily recognizable as the cars with the rich gringos from the “Las Brisas” hotel.
THREE times we were stopped by the police!! Each time we were told that we overlooked a signal far away. When I showed the policemen the letter from the hotel, it was always ignored. Instead I was asked: “My friend (?!?!), what can we do about this”? I then asked in my broken Spanish for an official traffic ticket (boleto) which of course means, that the money is paid to the government and not to these crooks. (Interestingly each time they started asking for a bribe of 600 pesos. I presume, that is the going rate). After some negotiations they always took less, but it left a very bitter taste and I will think very hard about going to Mexico again.
