My partner and I just returned from a 7-day trip to PV and highly recommend The Abbey. The hotel cannot be beat for location, friendliness, and charm. Luis, the co-owner, treated us like family and even “chaperoned” us for the fabulous Wednesday evening ArtWalk (which runs through May). His warmth and charm were the icing on our vacation cake, making The Abbey a hotel to which we will definitely return. Note though that this is not the Ritz – It is a boutique-style hotel with all the charm but not necessarily the luxury. We stayed in room 704, a two-room suite with both mountain and ocean views. The room was clean although not spotless. The bed was on the firm side and could have used a pillowtop, but overall was acceptable. Some of the fixtures are fairly dated; overall, the room was comfortable and spacious. We had a little trouble regulating the air conditioning, but it wasn’t a big deal since we were there in early May, so we usually just opened the doors and windows and enjoyed the sea breezes and the sound of the nearby surf! Upon arriving at The Abbey, you’ll be greeted by friendly staff and will enjoy a complimentary cocktail mixed by Gabriella. We had margaritas that turned out to be the best we had all week. The bar is open-air and fronts the pool area. During our week at The Abbey there was not too much activity in the bar/pool area (except for the first few days when a gay tour group livened up the action quite a bit!). I think the reason for this lack of activity is that there is just so much to experience within walking distance: The beach, numerous bars and wonderful restaurants, etc. On either side of The Abbey are two great, small bars: Garbo and Kit Kat. We also had a delicious dinner at Café de Olles (ask Luis for directions). They had a mixed seafood and filet mignon special that is to die-for! Two whole lobsters, numerous jumbo shrimp (butterflied with a nice, light citrus and garlic sauce), and a twice baked potato with rice and veggies. Do check out La Palapa at the end of Pulpito, we had both breakfast and dinner there (beachside), and the views and food quality can’t be beat! Next door to that is El Dorado which is excellent as well. As well, we often opted to eat breakfast right at the hotel: Quite delicious. The avocados are mouth-watering and the orange juice is fresh squeezed! Get the fresh fruit with yogurt and you won't be disappointed! For activities, we did a canopy tour (zip lining) as well as the gay cruise through Diana’s tours, both a ton of fun and both booked easily through the front desk. Overall, if you are looking for a gay-centered hotel in the heart of the pulse of PV, with friendly staff who will truly treat you like family, this hotel is perfect.
