“A Gem in Mismaloya”

Casa Iguana Hotel

At the Casa Iguana Hotel, we couldn't have asked for more. On a cobbled street across from the gargantuan La Jolla de Mismaloya, Casa Iguana offers a smaller, quainter, Mexican experience. The hotel is indeed comfortable, clean, and possesses all the necessary amenities such as a mini kitchen, fans, and a telephone. We actually bought avocados and tortillas in the general store and made our own guacamole. The rooms are very charming and spacious, with rustic furniture, Mexican folk art, tiled floors, with bedspreads and cushions covered in traditional style fabrics of red and orange hues. They are also equipped with communal balconies looking out over the pool, the palapa covered restaurant “La Cocina,” and to the lush surrounding jungle that climbs the hills in all directions.

D.J./ concierge Jamie plays mellow and moody world music throughout the day, loud enough to hear but quiet enough to read a book by the pool. The grounds are landscaped with grass and Kana flowers and vegetation surrounds the curving and voluptuous pool. Accompanying this scene are the sounds of wild life in the nearby creek. Parakeets, parrots, and a variety of tropical birds dance in flight overhead. Ironically, in this very comfortable little hotel, iguanas, geckos, turtles, donkeys, chickens, and dogs are never too far off. At night, the sounds of the jungle come alive carrying us in our dreams deeper into another time and place.

(For those who actually want to stay in touch with the world, Internet services are also available.)

Casa Iguana Hotel is, moreover, the perfect location since it is approximately 20 minutes by bus to Puerto Vallarta and about 10 minutes to Boca Tomatlán, where one can take water taxis to the more remote settlements on the south coast. On the first day, however, we simply walked down the dirt path to the beach, ordered a bucket of beer and ceviche, and talked with the locals. Just to remember: One little restaurant across the creek, nestled between mango trees makes great huevos rancheros. I believe it is just past the store, “La Pasadita” on the south side on the way to the beach. Another thing you cannot miss when you stay at the Casa Iguana is hiking (or driving) up to El Eden waterfall. I felt like a little kid, again, swinging from the rope to plunge into the deep, natural pool. You can also climb up a wooden ladder on the side of some rocks and ride down the slick boulders like a water slide. Wonderfully, there is a full service restaurant and bar right next to this jungle paradise so you can snack on ceviche, chips and salsa, and drink rusas de cerveza (beer, salt, and lime) in between cannonballs.

On the southeast corner of highway 200, near the bus stop there is a little makeshift food stand that changes its merchants and its concessions throughout the day. In the mornings, a mother and son team will squeeze fresh juices of all sorts and prepare breakfast and tacos on site. In the afternoons, Anselmo offers heaping cups of papaya, watermelon, jicama, mango, and coconut, all with their share of chili, lime, and salt (if you like).

I didn’t envy anyone at the more heavily touristed La Jolla de Mismaloya and will return to Casa Iguana for another charming Mexican experience. It was so very pretty and peaceful…the food at La Cocina was also good. I suggest that people sit at the one upstairs little table…that one is the best. The Casa Iguana Hotel is truly a little piece of magic. Beautifully situated, it is tucked along a tiny cobbled road in the village of Mismaloya while still close enough to all the sites. One can always take the bus or taxi into town in the evening for more action. This gem is the right spot for anyone who is looking to not only get away to a tropical paradise but to experience a little bit of the real Mexican color.

I hope all who reads this review will enjoy the Casa Iguana as we so did.
Buen Viaje!

“lived up to the reviews!”

Casa Iguana Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Vancouver BC

We stayed at the Casa Iguana over Spring Break 2008. I chose this hotels for all the good reviews. We were not disappointed! The rooms were more than adequate with the added bonus of a seperate room for the kids! It was great to have a kitchen and a mini market right at hotel. We made our breakfast in the morning, took sandwiches and snacks to the beach and ate out in the evening! It was a very affordable holiday for us. The pool was clean and refreshing and the hot tub was hot! The rooms were made up everyday and the beds were quite comfy(by Mexico standards!). The bus was a very short walk away and took us to town whenever we felt like it. It cost us a total of $5.00 US to get the four of us from the airport to Casa Iguana! Now how can you beat that price! Our kids had a blast at the pool and there was always a lounge chair available even during Spring Break! The pictures in the reviews are just what the hotel looks like so there were no surprises! I mean, there was no turn down service or fluffy robes or chocolates on the pillows but hey...we spent $90.00 US a night . A great family, budget getaway!!

“An Amazing Find!!”

Casa Iguana Hotel

May 1, 2008

After much research on Trip Advisor I chose this hotel due to reviews I read. What a terrific find!! My Fiancee and I arrived on October 26, 2005, 5 days before our wedding. We had no plans, only an idea. I've learned while "winging it" always make a firm plan B, to relieve stress. The manager was wonderful and said we could hold the ceremony on the rooftop deck, if need be. Our hope was to find a place to dive into the ocean and take "the plunge". We did and it was perfect. Back to the hotel: My Mother and best friends were VERY leary to stay at such an inexpensive hotel!!! They were relieved to check into a cute, very clean, nice hotel. In fact my childhood friend couldn't bring herself to check into a "cheap" hotel. She stayed across the way at La Jolla de Mismaloya and was so disappionted (then it reeked of mold and mildew. now???) she tried to check out and move to Casa Iguana but they were going to charge her well over $300 for each of the5 nights. My husband and I stayed from 10/26-11/23 and had a wonderful experience w/ the staff, the few other guests, the restaurant... They cleaned whenever we wanted, made all of our reservations, and just helped w/ anything!! I very highly recomend it as do my leary friends and family!!!! A great surprise!

“Wonderful Time”

Casa Iguana Hotel

Apr 2, 2008

My husband and I stayed in this hotel a couple years ago. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this hotel but we were both very pleasantly surprised. Everything was wonderful. The Staff was very nice, the rooms were clean and spacious. It was just the two of us but it was nice to know that we could bring two other friends with us b/c there were separate rooms. The kitchen and dinning area was great. We went to the supermercado in downtown PV and bought groceries. We had breakfast every morning in the room before heading to town. We never needed to rent a car. The bus picks you up right at the entrace to the hotel, which is a few minute walk from your room. The beach is right across the street. We took the bus everywhere. It runs until about 11pm at night so we could get up early in the morning and spend all day in downtown PV until late at night. PV is about a 15-20 minute drive from the hotel on the bus. The scenery is wonderful and I loved looking out the windows during the rides. We never felt really secluded and really enjoyed have a nice quiet hotel to return to at night. This hotel is great and very easy on your pocket book especially if you are a AAA member. They offer a good discount for AAA. I can't wait to go back!!

“What a GREAT Little Secret”

Casa Iguana Hotel

4 of 5 stars

This was a great find. I was cautious when I saw the price we were paying and that the hotel was outside the city. I was delighted to see that I was wrong. The property was clean, the staff very friendly and attentive. All suites rooms with Mexican Rustic decor (nice touch). And third night is free!!! Can't beat a deal like that. The pool was clean, the jacuzzi inviting and the view breath taking. Waking each morning to the jungle sounds was awesome, The bus into town is just 500 ft up the road. Very easy to get into town and back again. The Beach was just down the road with cafes and palapas available. Water taxis, pleasure craft and snorkling/diving boats are available as well. The beach is shared with a nicer hotel so it is kept clean and inviting. The hotel also has a general store on the grounds open until 10:00 for that late nite snack or to stock up on margarita ingredients. I can't wait to return.
