“Aligator Warning!”

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

We have just returned from what was to be an amazing trip for my best friends wedding at this resort! The wedding was amazing until her youngest brother was attacked by an aligator at the jetty on the laguna side of the hotel. We had no idea there were aligators in the laguna and no one had informed us on arrival to the hotel. I don't think my friend would have chosen there as her reception venue had she known. The hotel itself is lovely but it's lack of warning signs about the dangers at the laguna - lack of meaning no signs whatsoever! Although since the attack they have put a sign in place. Pity it took this to happen for them to do it as what happened would never have happened if there had been a sign in place. I would just like to warn anyone travelling there to be careful around the laguna area. The aligator, after the attack, cam up on the beach area were the reception was being held. Hotel staff through stones and tables to try get the aligator back into the laguna. Thankfully my friends brother has survived the ordeal and is recovering in hospital. The staff at the hotel need training in How to deal with an emergency!
Just be careful especially if you have young children they wouldn;t stand a chance.

“A good Time”

We too were scared after the negative reviews, but once we were there, breathed a sigh of relief. You could do a lot worse than then Westin Cancun.

Pros:

1) Royal Beach Club - a great deal, premium rooms. RBC rooms are $60 more a night BUT well worth it. RBC private pool, great service, includes full breakfast and happy hour with tons of appetizers. We didn't end up going to any dinners out because we ate so much at happy hour.

2) Location - the hotel is far away from the craziness of the north end of hotel zone. The beach is isolated and very few annoying vendors. Plenty of room on beach and next to pool. It is super easy just to take the R1 local bus, only 65 cents, to the malls, nightclubs, etc...

3) Service - Overall, the staff were helpful, friendly, kind. Our room was only 15 minutes late to be ready for check in and they went ahead and comp'd a night for us.

Cons:

1) Time Share sales - the Westin is part of the Starwood vacation group so the concerierges at the Westin like to talk to you about timeshares. They aren't pushy, don't worry, but it is a little tiny nuisence. If you say you aren't interested, they won't bother you anymore but our concerierge looked at us like we had two heads when we said flat out we wouldn't do it.

2) Room cleaning - the maid seemed to have her own schedule that varied day to day and divereged from the door sign in which we indicated every day, what time she needed to come. We were desperate for toilet paper at one point.

3) Humidity - We always had air conditioning, but the rooms seemed a wee too humid.

Hope this helps

“Tried but did not deliver”

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

My wife and I planned to stay for 5 nights but left after two nights. The food in the restaurants was average for the price. The staff was very polite but all requests took too long to do. The Royal Beach Club room was nice but did not have CD player. A request for one could not be accomodated. A member of the hotel staff unlocked the Room door twice in the middle of the night. A complaint to the Hotel Manager was basically ignored. I will not return to this hotel.

“Perfect Hotel if you want to relax”

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

4 of 5 stars

The Westin Cancun is the perfect getaway to relax and unwind from the every day routine.

The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, we just got back yesterday and we had a wonderful experience. One advice that I will give future travelers to this hotel is to go ahead and pay the for the "Royal Beach Club"; is well worth it. They have breakfast everyday (eggs, omelets, bacon sausage, pastries, fruit, all kinds of cereals, four different kinds of juices, yogurt, etc), and at 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. they have free drinks, and appetizers, which for our family that was our dinner. Also when you stay at the "Royal Beach Club" you get free internet and free use of the gym. (I believe there is a $10.00 to use each one of them).

If you are looking for a hotel where you find many activities, this is not the place for you, this hotel is very secluded and quiet. That is what we liked. Is about 15 - 20 minutes from town (where the clubs and restaurants are). The hotel is great for families and honeymooners.

We had a wonderful time and a wonderful experience. I'll defenitely will go back to the Westin.

“Nice Hotel but too far from nightlife”

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

Jun 3, 2008

We spent 3 nights at the Westin in May, although the hotel is definately 5* and very 'modern and funky' I personally didn't find it to offer much in the way of good facilities...

The Westin is the second (or second-to-last) hotel on the "Hotel Zone", meaning it is about a far from all the restaurants and nightlife as possible to get! Although the buses were just 6.5 pesos, it took about 20-25 minutes to get to "Plaza La Fiesta" where all the restaurants/bars/shops are. In the evenings this isn't much of an issue, but since the hotel charges $7.50 (dollars!) for breakfast its a very long busride to find something to eat before you start your day! When paying over £100 ($200) a night for a room I would at least expect a free breakfast to be included in this price, even if just coffee and croissants!

The beach is beautiful, but very exposed to the Caribbean, and the waves are quite rough as a result... in the 3 days we were there the red 'no swimming' flags never came down. However, the pools are good, but there are no jacuzzis on the beach level which was a shame. The beach bar was also quite expensive, as was the restaurant, and the menu quite limited.

Having spent our 3 nights (pre-booked) at the Westin, we then moved up the beach to the Blue Bay Club (see my other review). Please note this was what we had arranged as part of our holiday, we didn't change hotel because of any problems with the Westin!
