“Great Trip”

The Royal Cancun

The hotel is wonderful! We recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing trip away.

Good: We arrived around noon and were shown to our room right away. There were a couple things we hadn't done correctly prior to arriving, and the front desk's response was always "No problem!" We stayed in both the Royal Corner Ocean Suite and the Royal Presidental One-Bedroom Suite Oceanfront after a cheap upgrade. We were on our honeymoon. We got up to our first room to find the honeymoon package of roses, towel swans, etc. only to be sad because we were moving to another room. No issue because they did it all over again for our second room. What a treat! Food was mostly wonderful. The pool was warm most days except after it rained. The beach was lovely, but the waves were a little rough. Wonderful guacomole. Turn down service was nice. Take a trip up to the 8th floor even if you aren't staying there. Fantastic view of the lagoons.

Bad: Tapas is terrible. We are 90% sure they just take all of the other restaurant's leftovers and serve them again. No one was eating there and we should have taken the hint. The "coffee bar" is a joke. It is one of those pre-set machines that you would find in a college dorm cafeteria. Can't they hire a barista? On two occasions our steak was very underdone. I am not sure if it was a cultural thing or if the cook just didn't know how to make a steak medium well.

All and all enjoyable. We probably won't go back, but it is more because we didn't like Cancun then because we didn't like the hotel.

“A Lovely Experience”

We mom, sister and i stayed at the Royal from June 22nd-26th and had an excellent time. As others have stated the best part of the resort is the service and staff. They are really some of the nicest people i have ever met. The food was also great. Spice, the buffet, for breakfast is a must do and they do change what they offer a bit, which was nice. We tried every restaurant except for Tapas and have no complaints. We also made great use of the coffee house and the 24 hour lounge - everything was at our fingertips.

The rooms were delightful. We enjoyed our balcony a great deal. I had no trouble booking my room online 48 hours before we arrived and i got the room i had asked for. Our first night there, the nightly entertainment was "casino night." We don't gamble and i had no idea how to play anything but we had fun. (I didn't win.) I must be honest, i peeped in on one of their other nightly shows and was not impressed. For those who want it hopping at night, you will have to go across the street or to some other venue to be satisfied.

We were always able to find seats at the pool, so i think the towel game is becoming less of an issue. When we had problems, like not being able to get a picture on the tv, help was sent quickly. I felt like staff members really wanted us to have a good time. The spa is excellent and the gym was nice and never crowded. They work very hard to get you to join their membership but they don't harrass you if you choose not to. I also like the location of the resort on the hotel zone - not far from the airport, close to several shopping centers and aqua world, where we booked a subsea explorer excursion, which was one of the highlights of the trip. Overall, we had a great time and can't wait to return.

This was our first time in Cancun and it was a Honeymoon Trip. The Royal Cancun exceeded our expectations!!!!!! I couldn't imagine staying at any other hotel when we visit again. The food was excellent, the service was excellent, the pool & the beach were excellent! I have to mention the entertainment/activity staff, they were fabulous!!!!!!!! Not sure how to spell his name, but the main guy in charge Saeed was amazing, energetic, always happy and joking and trying to get everyone involved in having fun at all times! The other guys with him helping also, very fun and energetic too! I don't know how they do it, they are there from 8:30am till 5pm w/a couple of hours break and then right back at the hotel for the evening shows and taking people out till 3am to clubs. I think they only get 1 day off a week. It was really nice having service 24/7. The 24 hour lounge was fun, the coffee shop was great. We ate every restaurant, except Tapas. We drank the water (filtered) at the hotel, but I heard a lady from another hotel say she had a drink at Senior Frogs w/ice (Margarita) and was sick her entire trip. I don't know how anyone who has ever stayed here can complain about anything!! If you don't think the portions of food are enough, you can get more. You can eat and drink as much as you like around the clock. I think we gained weight from all we ate and drank. They have people to set up excursions w/out by the pool during the day (hassle free). We took a day trip to Isla Mujeres and snorkled - fun!! I will go to Cozmel next time and do the zip line and I think they have better snorkling there! As far as the time share thing, we said we didn't want to do the tour and we were never bothered again. Others we spoke to who did the tour, said they wished they didn't wasted the couple of hours it took, but they received a beach bag and $50.00 to spend in the hotel, so that made up for it. At the pool, Cesar and Jessica were awesome. We always had a drink in hand and Cesar helped me w/Sun Poisoning lotion. To go shopping, we took the local bus (very easy), I think 7 pesos (.70 cents), but used American dollars, we never saw the change. Use Pesos on the bus if you don't want to spend and extra .30 cents each way. The biggest hassel we had on our entire trip was at the airport on arrival, someone approached us that looked like airport personnel and took us to a counter to talk to us. We thought he was informing us about good prices on tours and being helpful, but he was trying to get us to buy into a time share tour at another hotel and offering discounts if we went for tours. I told him we weren't interested and walked off. Another person from his organization approached us as we were walking off and said he wanted us to see the hotel and wouldn't charge us to see it, I told him to forget it. If I had to plan this trip all over again, I wouldn't change a thing!!!!!!! We did tip, but not necessary. A dollar here and there is plenty. At lunch we tipped $3.00 and dinner $5.00. Trip advisor reviews were most helpful, so when you get back from your trip, be sure to post your pictures and give your opinions, other people really do appreciate the information!! Anyone who recognizes me in the pics, please write to me, as I really liked everyone I met and didn't get a chance to exchange email addresses with or you can write me for additional information if I don't know you at: hiddenhorse@hotmail.com FYI: The sister hotel next store is not 1/2 as nice The Royal, but you are able to go over and use their facilities. We went over there and immediately came back to our wonderful hotel. There were a lot of kids (teenagers) at the other hotel and the pools were not very pleasing. It's worth a look to go over there and see that you are truly in the best hotel in Cancun by far!!!!!!!! :)

“Already Planning Our Next Trip”

The Royal Cancun

Jun 27, 2008
9/9 found this review helpful

My wife Alisa and I returned from a great stay at The Royal in Cancun. Since I rely on and enjoy reading as many trip reports as I can, I thought I’d return the favor. This is an abridged version to the hotel review section so people don’t give me a hard time about things that they don’t want to hear about- i.e. the flight, transportation, etc.

We arrive at the lobby-, which by the way the pictures don’t do justice. Our bags are taken and we are escorted promptly to the 6th floor concierge. As promised, cold towels and champagne are waiting for us. We are early so our room isn’t ready but we don’t care because we are off to lunch at Pelicanos. Almost- a brief detour by the Real Club for 10 minutes. We never made the presentation-, which by the way we will look more into at our next stay- and we were never approached again. Anyway, lunch was amazing. We had our first of many Mango Tangos. After lunch it’s a brief tour off the hotel and our room is ready.
WOW! Amazing room. Cake and champagne are waiting as it is Alisa birthday and our anniversary (OOPS it says honeymoon lol). Towel art(sorry I can't help it ;D) and rose petals on the bed. A very nice touch. Room 633 is a non-smoking Royal Ocean front room on the quiet poolside. There are concrete walls on both sides adding to the privacy. The view is amazing- especially from the hammock. Quickly unpack and then off for a quick dip in the sea and then to the pool and the swim up bar for a few welcome drinks. Truthfully we didn’t spend much time here during the week as the pool side drink service was amazing especially Jessica and Guadeloupe. I also met Caesar the playadormo today. I went up to him and said, "are you the famous Caesar from Trip Advisor ". He smiled and said yes and he was very appreciative of the nice things said about him. I might add it is all deserved because he is always working hard to make your stay more comfortable. From cooling mists, to scalp and hair sun block, to aloe lidocaine mixes, to frozen grapes. Also, I don’t know what he uses but he’ll clean you glasses so well you won’t believe it.
Back to our room, shower- again AMAZING! Big enough for both of us! Dinner tonight is at Asianas. We chose the hibachi seating for the show. Met some great people who we spent a lot time at the pool at for the remainder of everyone’s stay. What a great presentation and everything from sushi, soup, and entrée was just perfect. We returned to our room, which was all set with the romantic turn down service (which we had every night). We even received the ortho and anti-snore pillows as requested by Alisa. Good night.
Monday
A wonderful nights sleep and its up at 6:00 and get ready. Relax on the balcony for a few and down to the pool. Towel game was never that bad all week. Great spot at the activity side of the pool. Relax for an hour or so and then grabbed breakfast at Spice. Great selection at the buffet and made to order eggs, waffles, hotcakes, and French toast.
A nice relaxing morning at the pool followed by a few games of pool volleyball with "Mexican Rules". This was constant every morning at 11 and afternoon at 3. Great time with the entertainment staff- especially Alex, Sayid, and Oscar. I can still hear "San-fran-cisco" over and over.
Lunch today at Pelicanos again- scallops for Lisa and enchiladas poblana for me. Coconut Ice cream for desert (soo good- I think I had it 1-2 times a day).
I headed to the gym and Alisa took a run down to Senor Frogs and back (about 2 mile). I hit the spa and the cold plunge, which is refreshing to say the least.
Dinner at Maria Marie’s tonight. The Caesar salad, fillet with shrimp (me), halibut (Alisa), creme brule (shared). Headed down to the lobby bar to sample a few anejos and respados with sangita. Good stuff/
We headed out with the staff to Dady’O. Great time Back to the room by 3:30.
Tuesday
Not such an early start- 8:30. Still plenty of choice spots at the pool by 9:30. Relax and try to recharge after breakfast at Spice. Alisa does pool aerobics and seems to be feeling ok. Lunch at Spice today was great.
Alisa is not feeling too well but we try to head out to Tapas. The Parmesan soup was delicious!! After ordering its clear that she is not going to make it though dinner. Chills and nausea from the pain. The captain calls the medical staff to the restaurant to check her out. To her embarrassment they send a wheel chair and oxygen. They giver her some burn ease gel as some sulfa powder and we head back to the room. The staff did a great job attending to her needs. I treat her and we call it a night. Open the patio door and fall asleep to the sound of the surf. One of the most relaxing and sound night’s sleeps I have ever had.
Wednesday
Up at 6 and Alisa is feeling much better. Breakfast at Spice, relax, spray from Caesar, Mango Tangos, volleyball- a typical day in paradise. Lunch at Asians was delicious. A nice siesta in the pool side cabana then back to the room for our 6pm Chefs Plate reservation. Elegant, gorgeous presentation, delicious food, and great company. If you are a fan of Top Chef or a foodie, you will thoroughly enjoy this. The week’s menus are available at the Romance Concierge. We enjoyed every course.
A mini Trip Advisor meet up at Pancho and Willy’s for karaoke with Chubby. Met Ella Bear as well her daughter and her friend, 3 of the 7 scots and Goran. Since we also had plans to meet up with people from The Royal for a night out, we had a few drinks, Alisa sang "Me and Bobby Magee" and we bused it back to the Royal.
Tonight was Basic. What a cool place!! It’s opened at the top and very unique. It was our first but definitely not out last time. Again- 40USD gets you transportation to, admission, VIP bottle service and a member of the entertainment staff who will take care of you all night. The center dance floor of Basic is on springs and moves up and down while you dance. Takes a little getting used o but definitely cool. They also make it "rain" inside the club at times as well as have water shoot up from the floor. The music was a great mix and the crowd was mixed as well. We walk back to the Royal ( 5 minute walk at most), hit the 24 hour lounge for some munchies and water, and back to our room at 4:30. Room service was quick and delicious burger for me, and pancakes for her. What a great night! Big thanks to Alex who looked after us, in particularly Alisa, when I wasn’t around.
Thursday
Up at 8, breakfast at Spice, pool stuff. Still got a great spot. Brief early am showers might have cleared it out a bit. Lunch at Pelicanos followed by my last pool volleyball game. We head back to our room to pack and get ready for our massages. Outside of the Spa at sunset- perfect. Alisa got the relaxation, and I got the deep tissue massage. I fell asleep with about 10 minutes left. Truly an amazing experience. Out for dinner with some new friends at Asian’s. After dinner we ran across the street for some shopping for the kids. We thought about heading out to Coco Bongo with the staff but between the night before, the massages and wonderful dinner, as well as our 10:30am pick up the next morning we decided to relax at the lobby bar with some of our new friends. While we missed Coco Bongo, it was the best call as we were able to relax that night and actually use the Jacuzzi which was more than big enough for the both of us.
Friday
Up at 6. Finish packing. Take a long walk on the beach, visit the Gran next door and head into the sea for a bit. Final breakfast at Spice. Head to the pool to say out good byes. Back to the room, check out/return the I-pod, and painfully say good bye to our wristbands. While waiting for our transport back I see that there is just enough time for one more coconut ice cream for the road. With only one other pick up we are at the airport with more than enough time. Check in for USAir was quick unlike the HUGE line we saw for Continental. Security was a breeze and then our first look at terminal 3. Like walking through a mall. Pick up a few more t-shirts, a Dominos Pizza and Ice cream for Alisa. Flight is on time and we are off to home. Arrive a half an hour early but still have to wait 15 minutes for the other plane to embark.

Overall
An amazing resort, beautiful room, the best bed, great view, great pool, above and beyond service, and a nice beach (definitely the best of the hotels in that part of the zone). Many times during our stay Alisa became choked up and was overwhelmed by how perfect everything was at The Royal Cancun.
We tipped everyone- bellboy, housekeeping, minibar person, bartenders, servers, pool service, Caesar, and the activity staff. They all work so hard and always have a smile on your face. Tips seemed appreciative but never expected. We are already planning our next trip in October, and one in either May or June of 2009. We also plan on taking our kids to Playa’s Gran Porto during spring break. I guess the time-share might be a good option for us. Lol.

“Best Holiday Ever !!”

The Royal Cancun

Jun 26, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 weeks from the 9th - 23rd May (sorry for the late review). It was the best place we have ever stayed. We booked a Royal Ocean View room. The only thing that we didnt like about it was that we were told that we could do the online checkin and would have golf with this package, but when we arrived there we were told that this was no longer available with the Oceanview room. So if we were to do it again we would not book the Royal Service as it cost us an extra £200 which is $400. Although as we had already paid for it we made the most it.

Room service: We really liked the 24 hour room service. The menu is not big but you can order whatever you like within reason and they will do it for you. Being 24 hours was great (coming in from Coco Bongo at half 3 then ordering room service!)

Pool: Great size! Never overcrowded. The entertainment guys are so good at getting you to have a good time. We stayed at this end of the pool most of the time becuase it got the sun for longer. The towel game was not as bad as i thought it was going to be. We usually went down there around 8 and always got a good spot. Although we did see people reserve 8 chairs and not come to them all day!!

Staff: We didnt meet 1 bad member of staff there. The service is exceptional! We did tip every meal we went to becuase we felt they all deserved it although they never made us feel like we had to.

Spa: We both had a treatment in the spa because my boyfriend had a free 5 minute massage by the pool. He had a massage which he said was great and i had a facial. My facial was good and worth the money. We didnt realise before then that you could use the spa area without having a treatment. This is such a hidden secret! No one is every in here. Its great.

Arrival: We arrived at the hotel around half 4 in the afternoon and he said he had to look for a room for us. Left us for around 20 minutes then said we got very lucky as he had found a great room on 7th floor for us! (715). Then he said to us if you just go over for a few minutes and see our guest services they will take you from there.... Well we had just got off a 12 hour flight from London and wanted to go straight to our room.. so i told him and we were not bothered by them again. Got got to room 715 and it looked fantastic apart from 2 double beds. We were really unhappy about this. So i telephone concierge straight away and we were moved 3 doors along the next day! GREAT!!!!

Overall: Fantastic!! i would advise anyone to go to this hotel. We are desparate to come back next year!!
