“My dream apartment!”

I did a "Gaudi day" during my weekend break to Barcelona in September. After deciding to see just the Casa Batllo from the outside, I paid to see inside Casa Mila because I had heard so much about the roof. I was impressed by the outside - the balconies carry on the acquatic theme of Casa Batllo and look like seaweed. You start off in the amazing attic, where you can learn all about Gaudi's life and buildings (I suspect similair info would be in Casa Batllo which is why I decided not into go to both... I may be wrong of course). Next ascend to the amazing roof which is full of large and small chimneys and walkways criss-crossing the vast apartment block. The small chimneys look like Jedi knights. There is a great view of Barcelona - you can see the Sagrada Famiglia cathedral a few blocks away and a skyscraper that reminds me of the London "Gherkin" Swiss Re building. After spending way too long on the roof, I ventured down into the open apartment. It's like a tube apartment which goes right round the apartment block, so you can walk around in the circle, visiting all the rooms before ending back where you started. It was full of art deco furniture and lots of windows. Absolutely stunning. I can definately recommend this as one of the top attractions of Barcelona. Even if you're not an architecture buff, you'll be impressed by the structure.

So maybe I was a little bit Guadi-ed out by the time I reached Casa Mila/La Pedrera. It was wonderful but not my favorite. One thing I will say is that it's ALWAYS open -- I toured at 6 pm- 8:30 pm on a Sunday night. The courtyard and entrance is breathtakingly beautiful and the apartment is OK although lacking the whimsy of Casa Batllo. Loved the museum installation in the attic (and the attic itself) and the roof looked cool but couldn't go up because of the rain. :-(

Fortunatly I did go up on the roof of Batllo and there are lots of pics of Casa Mila's roof. The attic also has a nice wide window and skylight where you can see the main chimneys.

From what I saw if I had to choose between Casa Mila and Casa Batllo I would take Casa Batllo, absolutely. Still, La Pedrera IS worth a look.

“Whimsical Treasure in the City”

La Pedrera is not to be missed. It is in the center of the city near the Passeig de Gracia Metro station on Calle Provenza. The apartment building is 6 stories tall and features of Gaudi are displayed on the first, sixth, and roof. An elevator is available, or just walk up. The roof is a playland of weird and interesting architectural shapes that cannot be described. Go see it! You also can view the La Sagrada Familia temple from the roof, right down Calle Provenza. (Another place to see). There are videos, audio, and models of Gaudi's other projects around the world, all watched over by a competent staff.
The sample apartment is interesting for its then contemporary decoration.

“Barcelona's second cathedral”

My last day in Spain I had a choice to make - I could go with friends to Montserrat, the cathedral to hear the boys choir and have paella on the beach or trek to the Picasso Museum and try to see as much Gaudi as possible.

It had been raining for an entire week and the idea of more wet and cold on a mountain lost out to wet and cold in the city where I could duck in for a coffee when warmth was needed.

I'm sorry I missed Montserrat but I found a cathedral in the sky in Gaudi's La Pedrera/Casa Mila. The fantastical work of Gaudi became beautiful and serene in the attic under the roof. Wonderful job of presentation combining models and video, music and views. Cost is 7Euro to visit the apartment replica, the attic and the roof - definitely worth it. Well trained quides within the building.

Amazing courage of Gaudi's patrons is to be lauded. Barcelona must be praised for maintaining the Gaudi legacy and making it available for others.
