I used Trip Advisor to select my hotel for our recent trip to Italy, so thought it only fair I shared my experience of Hotel Limonia.
There are a lot of mixed reviews on this site, and I can see why people might have had a negative experience, its all down to expectation level.
We visited the hotel from 18th July, with low expectations. It was a last minute deal, in an area we were unsure of. Hopefully, the comments below are balanced enough for you to make the right decision for you:
1. The room. We were quite pleased with the room we received. Yes, it was very dated, but our expectations were not high. It was very clean, the beds were fine, we had plenty of cupboard space, a desk and a sofa. The balcony overlooked Lake Garda and we couldn't have asked for a better view.. From a personal point of view, we spent very little time in the room, so the fact it didn't look like a Hilton didn't pose a problem. It was clean and comfortable and thats all we needed.
I have read a few reviews referring to the water, but I never experienced a cold shower...thats not saying it didn't happen, but its wasn't a problem to me.
We had a private balcony, but some of the rooms and a communal balcony, something you may wish to consider/request. At night it was fantastic sitting out there, overlooking the Lake. One word of caution is that if your next door neighbour decides to talk all night, on the balcony, you may as well invite them in, because with the doors open you cant help but hear them. This happened once to me, and was quite annoying, but could happen anywhere....and of course, I could have closed the window.
There seemed to be an air conditioning system in the room, but it didn't work...we didn't complain as the rooms were cool enough anyway.
The hairdryer was old and useless according to my girlfriend...I didn't use it so cant comment.
Overall, I liked the room. It was cool in the 35 degree heat, the views were unsurpassed, and it catered for what we needed. It is however dated, so dont go expecting all the mod cons....as Ive mentioned, its not a 4 star Hilton, its an Italian 3 star, so check your expectations before you check in.
2. Hotel. The hotel itself is quite a distance from Limone, and its important you understand this before booking. It takes around 20 minutes to walk to town. Again, lots of contrasting reviews about this. It is a hilly walk, but the hotel is built into the side of a mountain, so you'd kind of expect it ? There is a really good bus service offered by the hotel, and at 1 euro each, you can catch a bus to Limone from outside the hotel reception, no problem. We didn't bother and walked everywhere, depends on your fitness and age. the walk to town is much easier than the walk back, but as Ive said, there is a good bus service. The walk up to the hotel from the main road is the biggest hill, very steep, but probably a 3-4 minute walk, so not mount everest. I never really found the hills a problem, Im 33 a fairly fit. I don't think I'd let my nan walk it though. Again, its difficult to say if this is going to be a problem to every individual, I didn't find it an issue at all, and its a really nice walk....just something to be aware of though.
The hotel itself is probably in the best location of all the hotels we walked past. Quite a few on the way into town looked slightly cramped next to each other and the balconys didn't have any privacy. Depends again on what you want. If you want to be close to town, you're obviously going to be closer to more hotels, housing etc. We loved the seclusion of this hotel, it was out the way, not too far, but enough for lots of peace and quite.
The swimming pool is excellent. Again, it over looks the Lake, breathtaking views. On hot days you have to get down there early, as there are lots of people who put their towels down before breakfast....but you get that everywhere. We didn't use the hotels health spa, as the weather was great, but had a look, and its all new and quite impressive.
3. Food. Ok, lots of mixed reviews again. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and found the choice limited at times, but there were plenty of salads...in fact the only thing she complained about was the fruit...which wasnt of the highest quality. I personally like the food....it was adequate. Ok, it wasn't fantastic, but we didn't pay a massive amount for the package holiday, so for what we paid it was fine. Breakfast consisted of cereals, toast, cakes (from night before), yogurts, fresh juice, tea, coffee etc...so lots of good choice to be had. Dinner, started with a pasta dish, then you could go to the buffet cart, which consisted of 3 large tables, with a variety of salads, and also hot meats etc. 3 or 4 choices of puddings....I thought it was fine. saying that, some old chap was complaining about the food when I was standing there. I didn't understand his problem, but again, its down to expectation. I personally liked the food but you have to accept you'll not be getting a la carte, its an Italian 3 star hotel. One tip, is to get there 5 mins before the doors open and charge for the tables outside overlooking the lake. you'll have to battle the Germans, but its great fun once you get used to it ! We managed to sit outside every night, and its well worth it, the best view Ive ever seen while eating in a restaurant by far.
4. Staff. The staff were very good, always courteous and friendly. Some of them find it slightly difficult to understand english, as the north of the Lake attracts lots of Germans, so that seems to be their 2nd language after Italian, but they do fine in my opinion. Im one of those people who likes to visit and foreign country and talk to the locals rather than expecting everyone to speak fluent english and be faced with a little britain in the sun. I never had any issues with the staff, they were all very pleasant and helpful.
So, to sum up. A great little hotel in my opinion, but a budget option. I would certainly come back to Limone, a great locations, and I would come back to this hotel, I loved it. The only negative, maybe, the walk to town is not for anyone who doesn't enjoy walking or maybe struggles with hills...but there is a bus. We looked at a few others in town, and Im glad we picked this one, which is on its own in the mountain with fantastic views, they really will blow you away.
Again though, I will stress, its all down to expectation levels. If you want a 5 minute walk to town, dont come here. If you hate hills, dont come here (but Limone is pretty hilly all over). If you're expecting 5 star food, room service and a modern up to date room, dont come here. If however, these factors are not why you're going to Limone, and you would like to be part of the towns charm then I would recomend it.
