“A perfect place for a honeymoon!”

Mai Tai Resort

5 of 5 stars
Perth, Western Australia
Apr 27, 2008

The previous reviews are a hundred percent spot on - if you are lucky enough to stay at the Mai Tai, you won't want to leave!!

Andre' and Anthony are wonderful hosts and fantastic people, we enjoyed many funny conversations with them:) They went out of their way to make sure our stay at the MT was the best honeymoon!

We stayed in the Orchid Suite at the Mai Tai and could have quite easily just stayed there without going out to do the numerous activities around the area. As I said a number of times while there, you can quite easily do nothing at the Mai Tai or everything as there is so much to do around Port Douglas and the surrounding areas.

Breakfast was lovely and we especially looked forward to the freshly brewed coffee every morning and being greeted by their gorgeous dogs, Eros and Tara (we miss them!!). Andree and Anthony have so much local knowledge and gave us maps and booked our snorkel tour for us which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Our favourite things about the Mai Tai included:
- the fabulous bed, so comfortable and the reason for numerous sleep ins
- the beautiful outdoor bed (see pics) which we spent a lovely afternoon reading and dozing
- the huge outdoor shower
- the mountain scenery, especially beautiful in the morning while enjoying your tropical breakfast
- the peacefulness and tranquility of the place, the only noise is the birds in the surrounding bushland
- Andre', Anthony, Eros and Tara!

The location of the Mai Tai is great - we hired a 4wd and drove up to the Daintree rainforest (all day trip with numerous stops - make sure you stop at the ice cream place along the way to Cape Tribulation), Mossman George - only 10 minutes from the Mai Tai and into Port Douglas itself numerous times which is only a 10 minute drive.

Our highest recommendations are for the Mai Tai, we absolutely loved it and plan to return in the near future!

My husband John did all the planning for this trip, and all I knew was that I was going to Port Douglas for 6 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary and he couldn't have chosen better.
Mai Tai is just well heaven..... and every other superlative you can think off. The setting is breathtaking, the room large, comfortable, beautifully furnished, AND spotless (no mean feat in the tropics). Eating a wonderful selection of fresh fruit on the verandah looking out to sea was a fantastic way to start the day. Andre & Antony were the bees knees. As others know they make you feel so welcome, and not just on arrival but every time you return from an outing one or both will greet you (not to mention Eros & Tara) and have a chat to see if you've enjoyed yourself or if there's anything else they can do for you. Their local knowledge about where to go/what to see is not only vast but completely up to date. We followed all their recommendations on sightseeing and restaurants and never once were we disappointed.

We highly recommend Gary's 4WD tours thru the Daintree, Sailaway for reef snorkeling and Lunch with the Lorikeets at Habitat. SugarFlames and Mojos in Mossman for dinner (in fact we loved Mojo's so much we ate ther ealmost every night - just be sure to book, even monday or tuesday they are busy). Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery ( I hope I've remembered the name correctly, I don't have a bottle handy!!!) is well worth a visit. wine made from grapefruit!!! yummy. Nautilus in Port Douglas for dinner is stunning and the food was excellent but it was very dark, you could barely see your plate and the prices were a bit high but it's still something you have to experience if you can. But the best kept secret was .... Port Douglas Combined Services Club. It's tricky to find but sits on the waterfront not far from the marina. It's not big and flashy but has a wonderful outside deck area to sit and enjoy the views while eating what has to be the best hamburger in town. The food is wholesome, simple with large servings and incredibly cheap. A great spot for lunch.

This was our 1st trip to Port Douglas but I hope not our last. And as long as Andre & Antony have Mai Tai we would never stay anywhere else. Nothing else around seemed to even come close to what they offered. Luxury, Tranquility, Friendliness - a true oasis and pure perfection.

“A true break from it all”

We were looking for a real getaway for Easter this year - somewhere far from the crowds, but with enough to keep us busy during the days. This place gave us that and more. Set in its own valley retreat about 12kms out of Port Douglas, Mai Tai is run by a couple of guys who are clearly out to ensure that their guests enjoy a totally relaxed break. Each of the four suites are private, complete with their own walled-in garden, whilst the swimming pool comes complete with a view. The fact that this resort is set in its own 10 acre valley means that the only real noise is from the bird life which surrounds it.
To be greeted at the door by Anthony and Andre's two Bernese Mountain dogs (Eros and Tara) just completed the experience (if you've never met a Bernese, you're in for a treat!).
The guys are happy to suggest things to do, although to be honest, you're spoilt for choice here - from self-guided tours, to 4WD trips into the Daintree, to snorkeling or diving on the reef. It's not difficult to fill the days. But returning to Mai Tai in the evening, having a late night swim (pool's open all hours) or relaxing in the Balinese grounds rounds it off perfectly.
Be warned, though, that the trip to Port Douglas is at least a 15 minute drive (although transfers are available for $30 one way), so if you are planning a meal/drink, you'll need a designated driver! Port Douglas itself is charming, with several very good restaurants (and one stand out - the Nautilus).
Overall, this is a standout retreat for those who just want to get away from it all. Highly recommended.

“Wonderful honeymoon experience”

Mai Tai Resort

My husband and I stayed there for part of our honeymoon in Australia. We stayed for 3 nights after a very long flight from the states and it was a great place to just relax and do nothing. Even though the weather wasn't great, we had a great time on our outside patio, at the pool and hanging out in our room . Andre and Anthony we're great hosts, with a big movie collection so even when it was raining we were quite content.

The resort really is up in the mountains, which really makes it beautiful, but if you are like us and uncomfortable about driving on the opposite side of the road, then make sure you factor in transportation costs as they can add up. Expect to pay $60 average for a cab one way to or from Port Douglas. Andre and Anthony were very accommodating and offered us rides when they were going into town, but for dinner the resort is really out of the way if you don't have a car. We didn't mind because we purposely split up our stay in Port Douglas with a couple days in the mountains and some in town, but it would be hard to stay longer than a couple days without a car.

We really loved our stay and we will stay again if we are ever back in Port Douglas. Spend the extra money for the outside shower, it truly is a unique experience and was a great honeymoon memory.

Firstly, I have to say that my partner & I did not stay at the resort. We found it during a stay at Port Douglas and were looking for a retreat for later this year. We were referred to Mai Tai by our friends.

We went up to the resort and were warmly welcomed by both Anthony and Andre, who were gracious enough to provide us with refreshments after showing us around. This is a totally amazing place to stay. private and secluded, the most perfect place to relax and unwind.

The rooms are stunning with an incedible attention to detail. As for the surroundings, words simply cannot say how beautiful they are. One of the advantages for us is the presence of two beautiful dogs, Tara & Eros. We felt totally at home.

In any event, we went back to have dinner with Anthony and Andre along with some friends and we have booked a 3 week stay with them simply because the resort is so beautiful and the hosts are brilliant, unlike the impersonal and fake welcome offered by other so called resorts.
