Hotel Helix - a Kimpton Hotel

Aug 3, 2008

The first room we were assigned was so tiny we brought home bruised shins from bumping into the bed corners. Because this was a Hotwire booking, we had no choice but to endure our 6-night stay. Reluctant front desk staff made us wait 3 nights for a larger room to become available. "Pet-friendly" means you'd better not mind barking dogs. Last straw was the ghetto party held in the 3 adjoining rooms our last night. Bass notes were so loud our beds vibrated - calls to security were useless. Partying went on til 2:00 a.m. - even in the hallway outside our door. Avoid this hotel if you want a comfortable, relaxing stay.

    • Disliked — Unresponsiveness of staff to guest comfort. Tiny rooms. Overall dark, dingy feeling.

Dear tomego,

Thank you for taking a moment to post such an candid and spirited a review about your visit with us. I'm terribly sorry that your experience at Hotel Helix was not an outstanding one and that a room more suited to your preferences was not available sooner. The style and flair of the Helix often make it a fun environment for socialites on the weekends. However, in my experience our guests, especially those traveling with pet companions, have typically been very considerate of one another. I was disappointed to read that was not the case during your visit and that our team failed to intervene on behalf of you and your family. This is not manner in which we strive to treat our guests and this matter will be reviewed internally from a training perspective to ensure that this is not repeated moving forward. I can only hope that you will consider returning to Hotel Helix in the future, as we would love an opportunity to regain your confidence.

Different, as advertised! Great location & very clean. Would certainly stay there again! Walking distance to Dupont Circle (restaurants) and Adams Morgan (nightlife).

Had a king deluxe room which was very roomy (with the exception of a very small bathroom). Aveda bath products were a nice touch.

Trendy lounge & adjoining patio area. Lively on Friday - quiet on Sat & Sun.

Nearby restaurant recommendations:
Hank's Oyster Bar (1624 Q Street NW) Outstanding seafood!
Circa At Dupont (1601 Connecticut Ave NW) Outstanding drinks!
Corner Bakery (1425 K Street NW) Good breakfast value

“Outstanding!”

Fantastic hotel. I have stayed at Kimpton Hotels before and I liked this one the best. Service was outstanding - Georgina was perhaps the best hotel staff member I've ever met! So professional, thoughtful, helpful, and friendly! The room is large and my bed was in an alcove - very cool! I was away from my infant daughter, so I had to pump while at the hotel. They gladly gave me a refrigerator in the room and waived the charge so I could keep the milk cold. The location is fantastic - right next to Whole Foods (yum!). My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the chair to work in was pleather or some other similar material, and it was not really made for working. I would vote for a real desk chair such as an Aeron. But overall, a 5-star stay!

Hello everglades_gal.

Thank you for your posting. We greatly appreciate your feedback. I am sure Georgina will be happy to know she made such a positive impact on you. I can understand your feelings about the room and other than the desk chair you seemed to enjoy your stay.

I do hope that you will be able to come back and join us soon!

Have a great day!

“Not so great for business travellers”

Hotel Helix - a Kimpton Hotel

Jun 11, 2008

This is my first Kimpton hotel stay on a business trip to DC. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel for business travellers who needs to use the Internet as the connection in the room is very slow (although free). The gym was disappointing, it only had 3 machines and the AC was not even working. My double bed room is much smaller than I had expected (I had come from NYC). My bathroom comes with a shower rather than a bath tub, which I was not very excited about. The service I received was subpar to all the great reviews I read here. On separate occasions, the trash in my room and the wine glass from the bubbly hour weren't even removed! The minibar also didn't come with a key and I had to call to ask for one.

However, I do like the location of the hotel. It is within walking distance of the Metro, downtown, White House and other tourist spots. Whole Foods, Starbucks, CVS are just around the corner.

This is a non-traditional hotel. The room decor and furniture are very colorful and unique. The coolest feature in the room for me was the dispensers for lotion, soap, shampoo etc. which was very convenient (although the lotion was way too watery).

Dear businesstravellerNyc, Thank you for taking the time to give us such candid feedback about your visit. I'm glad you found the decor fun and upbeat. I'm terribly sorry that you found the hotel difficult to enjoy from a business travel perspective and I assure that we are in the process of making improvements in this regard. Specifically, we are currently in the process of upgrading our internet service to ensure faster feeds and more reliable service for our guests! Thanks again.

“Unique, Friendly, Colorful.... I'll be back!”

Hotel Helix - a Kimpton Hotel

If you're looking for a unique little spot in a residential neighborhood, with friendly accommodating staff, I'd recommend this hotel without hesitation.

We were attending a conference at the DC Convention Center and the Helix offered a discount rate for conference attendees. When I called to confirm our reservation (which I'm glad I did and I recommend doing if you reserve through the convention center's housing bureau because they had some details very wrong), I confess to being a little put-off by the recorded phone greeting -- try it and see what I mean -- but we kept the reservation and we're quite glad we did.

Although less posh than other Kimpton hotels I've stayed at before, the rooms were comfortable, colorful, and very off-beat (see attached photos) -- and the staff could not have been more friendly. Everyone from the housekeeper who introduced herself to me in the hall and asked if everything was OK in our room to the lobby staff (it's hard to use the words front desk because they stand behind small platforms) who greeted us with a "welcome back" every time we walked through the entranceway's sliding curtains was professional and friendly and could not have been more accommodating (Late check out? No problem; You want to take everything out of the minibar and use it as a refrigerator? No problem; Directions anywhere? No problem; Want to enjoy your complimentary champagne up in the room instead of here in the lobby? Of course -- and don't worry about bringing the glass downstairs when you're finished; we'll get it later; Need your bill split in half with two receipts under different names? No problem; You just arrived back ten minutes after happy hour ended? No worries; Restaurant recommendations? What kind of food are you in the mood for?...). We liked the many eco-friendly practices of the hotel as well. The hotel is within walking distance of Dupont Circle, downtown, the Convention Center, the White House, and other tourist sites; within hiking distance of Adam's Morgan (1.3 miles); and about a 10-minute walk from the nearest metro stops. There's a 7-Eleven on the corner and Whole Foods Market a block away.

I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Dear PoblanoJ,

Thank you for staying at Hotel Helix during your trip to Washington DC. I am glad that you liked the neighborhood and that the staff were accommodating! Thanks for the great comments about the hotel and the staff. We do hope that you can return to us soon.

I am happy you enjoyed the eco friendly programs Kimpton Hotels have to offer. We all try to do our best to continue business while being mindful of the environment. There are over 40 different programs in place at Kimpton Hotels across North America. Some of the newest involve recycling left over food products into compost, adding lighting that dims and HVAC that turns down when no one is using the room, and serving more organic and fair trade food items in our restaurants.

Thank you again and please come back soon!
