“Rude Staff-Bad Rooms”

Albert Court - A Far East Hotel

This was my second stay at the Albert Court and I expected better. I read the most current reviews before booking, particularly those that spoke of staff issues but booked anyway hoping it was a bad day for them...wrong...They are , in general, totally unconcerned with the customer...

I checked in early (4AM) which cost me an additional $120SD for a Non -Smoking Room...The room was in the Annex, room 1111 across from the main hotel. The room had the smell of old smoke and mold, and an air purifying machine (the ion type) running apparently to try and clean the air...I asked for another room..."this is a non-smoking room and was the room I booked"... I was told

...Yes, I said , but it STINKS of smoke and mold...the solution was for the clerk to come to the room and spray orange scented air freshener sufficient to choke a horse...I was told to inquire after 2 pm and maybe they could move me. I asked if there were any other rooms...yes she said but they were not the room I booked! What????

I was moved to 1113 later, better room w/out smoke smell, but the area outside the room really smelled of chlorine, pine cleaner and orange....so bad that it was unpleasant to sit in the lobby...I felt crazy but complained...staff could care less..nothing could be done...I found two large pots in the hall with pans of bubbling oil in the bottom...some type of scent oil with a candle under it...apparently the annex used to be smoking and this was a way to rid the building of the smell....Staff refused to move me or cut back on the smell, manager was "unavailable".

After check out I returned to claim our left luggage on the way to the airport.

Kwan ( I think) the only male behind the reception desk, dressed in dark grey, took my claim check with a look of scorn, walked over to the bell man and handed him the check, came back to his computer screen....not a word said..."Do you speak?" I asked....He looked at me as if he smelled something bad and turned and went into the office behind the desk.....apparently not!

Except for the staff this place is pretty good, Most rooms are good

I will not stay there again.

“Great near Little India”

Albert Court - A Far East Hotel

Hotel exceeded our expectations. While the price was good value. We were able to have an very early check in just after 8 a.m. which was great since we had been flying for 17 hours. We passed on the in-house internet since Singapore was free city-wide wireless access.

Nice pleasant lobby area as well as glassed in elevators make for a nice introduction. We passed on the expensive breakfast since Little India was just 5 minute walk.

Air conditioning and ceiling fan worked great during 90 degree days. Room includes TV , refridgerator, kettle, tea and normal bathroom accessories.

They forgot to clean our room one day but a call to housekeeping corrected that problem. Perhaps there was confusion between the DND and the clean room sign on the door.

We stayed on the fifth floor that was very quiet. Even though there's a little construction in the main courtyard.

The gym facilities were nice with exercise machines jacuzzis and separate shower areas.

Easy walk to Little India MRT train station that was only one or two stops away from anywhere in downtown Singapore, which you could also walk too.

Tip on Little India. Cheap restaurants are preferred , try Khomala Vila, avoid more expensive as they overcharge and didn't take our $10 note since it had a tiny corner tear.

“Would've been a good hotel if not for the staff”

Albert Court was where I stayed the first time I went to Singapore. I didn't have any problems with them then and so naturally I booked again for this trip.

We stayed in an area opposite the main hotel building. It's a two-storey wing with a really slow elevator.

We got the cheapest room since we only needed a place with aircon to sleep. It was nice and comfy with a TV, a minibar and a tub. Nice.

The place is situated at the outskirts of Little India opposite the Tekka Mall. What's so cool is it's relatively near the Little India MRT station (about 5 to 10 minutes walk) and it's a couple of blocks away from one of Singapore's gadget malls - Sim Lim.

The downside for this hotel is that it's a bit harder to get a cab compared to the others. There's no taxi stand where you just wait and get a cab in just a few minutes. Here, you'll get more luck by asking the reception people to call you one, instead.

Actually, the cab issue isn't really much of an issue. But it's more of the rudeness of the staff. Except for the bellhop that helped me bring my luggage to my room, I feel that everyone in the frontdesk should take some hospitality courses. You can rarely see these guys smile. I also saw them scolding some guests about the correct check in time. For a hotel staff, there are nicer ways to do this.

“Wholly annoying”

I apparently ended up in a deluxe room, but I thought the room was pretty spartan for the price. I kept wishing, too, that I'd booked a hotel with a pool. Breakfast was reasonable but nothing special. The big problem came as I checked out. I'd booked a special rate that included internet and breakfast, but my final bill showed a charge for breakfast. I objected which led to an utter breakdown. They would not believe me even when I went to the internet and showed them the terms of the rate. (I didn't have a paper printout as I'd made the reservation while travelling.) After about 20 minutes of downright rudeness on their part (largely ignoring me), they finally relented to remove the charge "this one time". I'd made the reservation on the hotel's website just to be sure and avoid problems like this one. It's a good thing I'd left a lot of extra time to get to the airport. I'm pretty sure there's not going to be a next time.

Extra charges are about 30 SGD for 24 hours of internet if it's not in your rate plus 10 SGD per hour for late checkout. The breakfast that appeared on my bill was 20 SGD.

My mum and I stayed at the Albert Court Hotel for 3 nights. We payed a very reasonable price and we got what we paid for. The room was clean, the staff was friendly and that was all we needed. The hotel is not luxourious, but if you're visiting Singapore, you're out all day anyway so that doens't matter. It's fun to relax in the jacuzzi at night.

Breakfast is rather expensive and the menu is not very large. But there are enough opportunities to go out and eat in the city!
