Having visited Sharm El Sheikh twice, previously at the Royal Albatros and Sheraton I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews.
No the hotel is not like the Ritz in London but you also don't pay for that kind of quality.
We upgraded to a sea view room which to be fair wasn't really worth it as you couldn't see that much of the sea. Room was spacious, fridge to use for drinks (we took champagne and spirits from the airport knowing how expensive alcohol is in Sharm hotels) was great, nice big balcony and a clean bathroom in need of a little TLC but certainly perfectly workable.
Pool area is amazing - massive long pool that barely ever had anyone in it. Water got very hot and was like a bath by lunchtime! Lots of sunbeds however they do get busy and towards the end of our holidays school holidays started so it was getting busier - towel men were removing towels if beds were not being used. Beach area provided a little breeze but the sand got very hot under foot!!
Poolside restaurant, The Waves, was very good for a poolside restaurant and although it was expensive, it was no more expensive than the Sheraton and the food was much better. If you fancy a cheap alternative, a new shopping centre has been built up the road, about 15 minute walk away (turn left at the BMW garage and it is on the right, El Marcado), which has all the fast food favourites (McDonalds, Burger King, Starbucks, KFC etc) and cheaper than the UK. The shops don't open until 1pm but the food places were open pretty much all the time. Do not eat in the restaurants however: no toilets, no alcohol and very poor food!
We only ate in one other hotel restaurant, the Japanese style one, which was nice but again very expensive - get out into Naama Bay where 4 of us ate every night, with drinks, for under £80. Hotel was more than double this!
Drinks in the hotel are expensive but there is a 24/7 supermarket literally 10 minutes walk (even in the midday heat) where a can of diet coke was 20p!! Bottled water is just as cheap as long as you buy local stuff - stay away from Evian, that was over £5 per bottle! Buy drinks and put them in your fridge - we didn't incur any minibar charges as we simply emptied out all of their products and left them on the top.
Cleaning service was great but does improve if you tip a little throughout your stay.
3 of the 4 of us got eaten alive by insects. I called the doctor out through the hotel reception and he was great, spoke good English, wasn't too expensive and gave me an injection and advised me what to buy to make it better. There is a very cheap pharmacy in the little shopping centre up the road (El Marcado) - buy American insect repellant here, my UK version was useless, get plug in things from the supermarket and take cream from home. I got cream from the pharmacy at 86p a tube however when I tried to get more from the pharmacy in Naama Bay, they wanted £11 for the exact same product!! BEWARE!!
If you get a dodgy stomach, which you will, ask for mint tea in any of the restaurants and drink it - made a big difference and much better than UK remedies. Stay away from Imodium etc as they will make you feel worse.
All in all we had a great time, the weather was amazing (very warm at night though, never got below 32 degrees C), hotel was what we had paid for and I would go back.
Hope this helps!!
