I have just returned from the Delta Sharm Resort after spending what should have been a relaxing 2 weeks in the sun. Whilst the weather was fantastic the same cannot be said about the hotel.
In my opinion there is still alot of work to be done by this hotel to bring it up to an acceptable standard. It is most definitely not a 4 star hotel and is more akin to a 3 star. Below is a series of observations about my time at Delta Sharm. I shared these comments with the manager and have added what he said in response at the end of this post.
The food on offer in the restaurant is very repetative and unimaginative to say the least. The food is also of low quality and the number of choices on offer is poor. Furthermore, the way food is kept warm/cold/free from potential contamination is a major concern. The hotel claims they conform to British Health and Safety/Food regulations however they do not check the temperature of the food once it has been brought from the kitchen to the buffet area. My partner who is degree qualified and has been in the food industry for a number of years was shocked at the lack of awareness around food hygiene. As the food was so poor myself and my partner ate out most nights in Naama Bay.
It was also disappointing that soft drinks were served in what can be described as no bigger than a thimble. The beer on offer "Sakara" is on draught and is watered down so beware as it tastes very different to the bars in Naama Bay which also serve it on draught. The beer became better towards the end of my stay as other people had complained about this too.
The level of service by staff is poor. The staff at the resort are disrespectful, rude and very unhelpful. It is noticeable that if you tip the staff their attitude towards you becomes better but soon subsides if you do not tip them on a daily basis.
It should be noted that the staff who service the pool areas are more interested in chatting up females around the pool rather than taking orders/getting drinks/handing out towels. If I had a daughter I would be extremely uncomfortable as to how these members of staff act as they were inappropriate with females as young as 12-13.
Near to the main pool area and the pool with the slide are 2 shops which sell lilos etc. Be prepared to be hassled when going past on a daily basis.
The entertainment on offer at the hotel was good if you liked karaoke and typical british style "benidorm/butlins" entertainment.
The rooms were of an acceptable standard although they were basic and in need of modernisation. The rooms were cleaned on a daily basis and the sheets were changed regularly. The standard of the privately owned apartments were much better than the Delta owned accomodation.
It has to be said that the grounds of the Delta Sharm are very well kept and the pool areas are of a great standard.
I was also ill about 4 days in to the stay at Delta Sharm. I was bed bound for 2 days due to severe stomach cramps, vomitting and diahorrea. Make what you want of this.....
Whilst waiting to speak to the manager I found a pile of complaint forms on his secretary's desk. I probably should not have looked but I did and there were approximately 25 complaints on the desk. All of them were similar in nature and were very negative about the Delta Sharm.
Having spoken to the manager he admitted that there were a number of failings at the Delta Sharm. He noted that there was a problem with the staff and that he aimed to sort this out as soon as possible. He also admitted that there had been a number of complaints about the food and he hoped with the opening of a new restaurant in November that a better range of foods would be on offer. He said that the food hygiene system in place was not fool proof due to Egypt being a very hot country!
