“Great Hotel!”

Marriott's Maui Ocean Club

4 of 5 stars
Smyrna, TN
May 12, 2008

With the exception of the construction going on, the hotel is certainly a 4 star. When that is completed it might just move right on up to a 5!

After I was there 1 day, I came down with pneumonia! Just great! However, I was able to enjoy the hotel for the most part.

Our room, 7014, was wonderful. It was on the construction side, however, we also had a wonderful ocean view. It was clean and very nice. Enjoyed the mini kitchen very much.

The grounds were so beautiful and kept very nice. The pool was awesome. The staff was so very friendly and helpful. Only one person was rude - the pool towel guy. Make sure you have a towel card!

Besides the construction, I don't have any CONS for this property, only PROS.

As a travel agent, I look properties over as thoroughly as possible. I was quite impressed.

“Wonderful place to stay”

My family of 4 stayed here with another family of 4 in a 3 room condo. This is there timeshare and we were staying with them. We were not on the side of the construction so we never had issues. However we were not in the new tower so we did not have a full kitchen. A full kitchen and washer/dryers in the rooms would be the only things I missed. They do have laundry facilities on site. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, and we have a temperpedic at home. The pool is unbelievable. Our 8 year old daughter didn’t want to leave it. The slide was open from 9 am until 5 pm everyday. There is an over the pool cave that is perfect for endless games of Marco-Polo. Our 15 year old son was able to boogie board right by the hotel on the beach. We enjoyed the beach walk that runs all along Ka'anapali beach. We were asked once about a time share talk and declined since we have a timeshare of our own. We were never approached again. We would love to return to this resort again!!.

“Nice Property”

Marriott's Maui Ocean Club

4 of 5 stars
Duluth Minnesota
Apr 24, 2008

We stayed at this property from April 13-18. The first thing that stood out was the friendly staff, especially those by the pool. One in particular remembered our names from the first day we were there and interacted with our ohana when he saw us. We felt the property was one of the best we have stayed at, especially the pool area. We have been going to the islands for 15 years. We did not eat in the restaurant's on premise, as we ate in Lahaina. What we did see of the menu's did seem high to us. I will definitely book this resort for our next stay on Maui. It also has wonderful views of the ocean to sit and watch for whales. On one day the whales put on show for about half an hour. Had we not had this place to sit and enjoy the pool and ocean we may have missed this chance to see the whales at play. It was like you could reach out and touch them.

“CONSTRUCTION IN PARADISE-Gamble to stay there now.....”

Marriott's Maui Ocean Club

Apr 16, 2008

There was a lot to like and a lot to dislike about this hotel. We stayed April 5-12th with our 6 and 9 year old children. We are 50 - 50 on whether we will return to this property or try another next time we travel to Maui.

I will start with the positives

- Beautiful location. This hotel is right on Ka'anapali beach - one of the funnest beaches for children and adults around. The beach does get crowded at times but nothing like Wakiki. Still lots of space to stretch out. The location is close to the restaurants and Whalers Village, so you can walk on the boardwalk all the way to each end of the beach and still feel safe.

- Pool scene. My kids LOVED the pools. They liked the big pool with the slide however the slide was closed more often than not and not really sure why. There were a few days that were rainy when we were there but people were still swimming so I am not sure why they would close it. The smaller pool near the new tower is very nice and not crowded at all. We ended up spending most of our time there.

- The hotel felt safe and security seemed good.

- HEAVENLY bed. Very comfortable with lots of pillows. Had to ask for another blanket for the hideabed. Only comes with one very small light blanket.

- Monday night movie on the beach. The kids loved watching a movie near the beach!!

NOW for the things we disliked

- THe HORRIBLE NOISE AND VIEW OF CONSTRUCTION EVERY DAY EXCEPT THE WEEKEND, STARTING AT 7 AM!! When we booked (a year in advance) we asked for any tower but the one (Molokai) overlooking the construction. When we checked in I asked if they had accomodated our request and they told us flat out "no". We were on the 4th floor overlooking the construction with just a peek of the ocean. We were so dissapointed after saving all year to come to Maui to be overlooking and listening to construction all day long. We ended up going to bed early and getting up very early to avoid the noise. I was not able to sit on my lanai and enjoy the scenery, which is one of my favorite parts about staying on Maui. We asked to be moved to no avail. For this reason alone, I dont think I would come back to the Mariott until construction is completely finished. INterestly enough when we were approached by a timeshare salesman in Lahaina and were asked if we were interested in staying at the Mariott, we told him we were already staying there but were hestitant in the future to stay there again because of the lack of customer service/construction. The guy said, "well at least you got a big fruit basket!". Apparently if you complained long and hard enough they give people overlooking the construction a fruit basket. We never got one nor would we have been happy as that being the solution.

- Pool bar. Expensive (8.00 for a small watered down drink). Random hours, some nights it closed at 8 others at 10. Posted signs said it closed at 10.

- Towel Exchange - sometimes someone was around, sometimes not. Many of the employees at the towel hut were rude and indifferent. (Wouldnt be a big deal if you didnt have to get clean pool towels there every day).

- Resort fee. We were charged almost 8 a day for a resort fee, on top of what we already paid. Not sure what this was and we were not told ahead of time that this even existed.

- No maid service or even mid week tidy service with fresh bath towels.

- Small kitchenette/fridge.

- Loved having two bathrooms but strangely there is no light over othe shower in the entry bathroom which made using the shower almost impossible since it was so dark once the curtain was closed.

- No tables near the BBQ areas so you had to cook and go. No place to sit down and enjoy your bbq. Utensils had to be checked out and were not available in your room.

\
That about sums it up. Like I said, we would consider staying here again after construction is over but I think we will look for another place. I just got the feeling we were being nickeled and dimed to death. Customer service is somewhat lacking as well. Except Paul a young man who worked by the pools. Very nice and helpful each time we had contact with him.

“Awesome for families”

Marriott's Maui Ocean Club

Booked this resort thru Redweek (and offered less than what owner asked). We have three kids (ages 4-12) and went with the in-laws, also. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/3 bath unit in the main building and had an 'island view'. If possible, book the newer Lahaina building, which has full kitchens and built-in laundry in each unit. The original building used to be a Marriott hotel, and they knocked out walls here and there to condo it. The original building units have a small, utility kitchen (no stove) and no laundry. However, there is a laundry room on site, so not really an inconvenience.
Beautiful grounds, fantastic pool for all ages. My kids lived in the pool or on the beach the whole week. Buy the insulated cup in the Beach restaurant for 'free' refills all week. There is a kids program, which worked pretty well for the youngest, but didn't interest our older two.
Lots of traffic in Lahaina, and this property is about 30 minutes from the airport. There is a Walmart close to the airport, so we bought cases of bottled water and breakfast cereal there. There is a Safeway in Lahaina for milk (even organic!) and snacks. We grilled twice at the Ocean Club--several grills surround the pools and we never had to wait to use one.
Eat at the Lahaina Grill, drive to Twin Falls to walk and swim in a waterfall (and BUY THEIR BANANA BREAD), take a morning whale-sighting tour. Great sidewalk along the beach--you can walk every morning while the kids run in the sand.
The only downside we saw to this property was the beach--sand area was great, but water area was very rocky. We didn't trust our kids taking surfing lessons--we were afraid they would whack their head on a rock when they fell. Bring your water shoes!
