My expectations of the Aqua Aloha Surf were shattered when we first arrived. Our check in was delayed by a receptionist who clearly didn't know what he was doing.
We arrived at night and had been travelling all day so we were a little bit irritable. When we arrived in the room we found a single bed and what I would call a king single. We had booked a double, so we were a little disappointed.
When we did get to bed we found the beds lobsided and rather uncomfortable.
The next morning though we set off to get our bearings and were pleasantly surprised to find that we were only about 3 streets away from Waikiki beach and right in the heart of the shopping and eating district.
The room has a small kitchenette that includes a microwave, huge fridge and freezer and crockery and cutlery. Just 100metres down the road lies Hawaii's famous ABC store so we were positioned perfectly to look after ourselves - or dine out if we chose.
While there was no mini-bar, there was free internet access. A huge plus for us.
The rooms have a small balcony. The view isn't that great - just the concrete jungle of apartments and motels, but with the beach so close there's no real need to use it.
The included breakfast was a bit of a weird affair.
It was set up in a tiny section of the restaurant and there were very few seats available. So get in early or eat standing up. There were no cereals just breads, bagels, muffins, some fruit and beverages.
My recommendation would be to pop down to the ABC shop and stock up on food and grog first.
Overall, the motel was clean enough, the beds could be more comfortable but apart from that and the fact that it's hayday was clearly in the 70's, it's a good option.
There are quite a few other motels that are situated in locations just as good as the Aloha surf, so if you're after comfort, check these out first. However, if you're after a budget motel in a prize location then the Aloha surf will do fine.
