I wish I could give this hotel a great review due to their excellent customer service, but I just can't. All previous reviews are right about the public areas of this hotel. The lobby is beautiful, and the pool and beach areas are excellent and clean and were never crowded during the long weekend we spent there.
The rooms have been recently renovated, and in my opinion are just average. The bed is comfortable, but the bathroom is kind of awkward and the shower really DOES leak. I mean, it leaks all over the bathroom floor and the room floor, since the floors are completely tiled in the rooms with no carpeting. The temperature setting of the water in the shower was not adjustable, and believe me, I tried to adjust it. It was set at a temperature of almost hot, but not quite hot enough for someone who likes really hot showers, like me. The towels were nice, though.
As others have stated, there is no full-sized mirror, so get ready to stand on the bed to see yourself. The furniture is kind of 70s/80s office style, but there is a lot of closet space, and the balconies were apparently taken out in the renovations and the rooms expanded, so the room is very large.
The worst part about the rooms is the noise. We could hear every sound coming from the hallway as well as the surrounding rooms, including doors slamming, people coughing and showering and laughing. There's not much that I can't sleep through, but this noise woke me during the night and in the morning. I did not find airport noise to be an issue at this hotel at all.
A piece of advice: Avoid this hotel during Memorial Day weekend. The hotel was probably 75 percent full of guests who had come from NY to attend hip hop parties that are held in this hotel and the surrounding area. It was like spring break on steroids, but thankfully only from early evening on. The hotel staff explained to us that this occurs every year. They also explained that this was not typical of the atmosphere of the El San Juan, and we believed them. We originally had to move our room due to rowdiness on our floor, and the hotel compensated us for the inconvenience at checkout without us even asking.
All of the hotel staff were wonderful, from the front desk personnel to the waiters and chef in the Verandah dining room. I also noticed that requests such as extra towels (for mopping up shower water on the floor) were responded to almost immediately, every time.
A tip: If you do stay here, research on the hotel's website for their bed and breakfast package. It's over a hundred dollars a night less than the rack rate, and it includes breakfast at the Verandah dining room, which was excellent but pricey at $50 for two people every day. You need to stay three nights or more to get the special. They also provide free wireless internet access on your laptop, which is unusual for a large resort and much appreciated.
If you are looking for peace and quiet and a tropical atmosphere, don't think about staying here or in San Juan. If you like to gamble and are looking for nightlife, a pool scene and easy beach access, you will probably like this hotel.
