One popular day excursion from Thimphu is a visit to Phajodhing, which is located on the west of Thimphu at an Alt. of 3,700m. If one wishes to trek to Phajodhing, it is a beautiful and pleasant hike, surrounded with forests and valleys. From the village of Phajodhing, visitors can look back at the beautiful view of the Thimphu valley and the surrounding mountains. Within the village itself, there are several monasteries and a state monastic school in Phajodhing to visit and admire. The atmosphere in Phajodhing is calm and serene, as it is a place of meditation for many devout Buddhists. Visitors can stroll and explore the town.
Another popular place to visit is Punakha, which is the former capital of Bhutan. The route to Punakha is a steep one but on the way, one drives over the Dochula pass (3,050m) which is famous for its breathtaking view of Bhutan and the surrounding Himalayas. One site to see in Punakha is the Punakha Dzong, the fortress of 17 th century; this is interesting to see since it one of the most beautiful dzongs in Bhutan, built by the first Shabdrung in 1637. Nearby is the Khamsm Yulley Namgyal Chhorten. This town is equally serene and relaxing.
