You can access almost all of Sri Lanka ’s tourist destinations by riding the rail. From Colombo , trains run to Kandy , Nanu Oya, Bandarawela, Hikkaduwa, Galle , Matara, Anuradhapura , Polonnruwa, Negombo, Brntota, and Batticaloa. Though not luxurious, train travel is more comfortable than bus. Some trains offer first, second, and third class seating; others offer only second and third; and still others offer only first and second. Third class is incredibly inexpensive, but very crowded with rough wooden benches for seating. Second class costs a bit more, is less crowded, and offers hard but padded seats, and sleepers. First class offers air-conditioned coaches with observation cars and air-conditioned sleeping berths. Regardless of the class, the ride is often slow with long stops at many stations, but you will be treated some unforgettable sights and scenery along the way. Schedule and fare information is available at the Fort Railway Station and the Railway Information Center at Bandaranaike International Airport , Katunayake.
The island-wide network of bus services is another option. Vehicles range from large, modern and air-conditioned for intercity travel, to cramped, older and poorly maintained for shorter routes. From Colombo you can get an express bus to all major towns, but reserve seats in advance, expect a crowded ride, and be prepared to travel at breakneck speeds. Also, don’t count on getting a seat during the festival seasons. Schedule and fare information is available at the Central Bus Station on Olcott Mawatha.
If you go touring the island, take along some identification documents. But don’t leave them in a shoulder bag or suitcase. Instead, secure them in, say, a money belt. And leave photocopies of your passport and other important documents back at the hotel.
