Taxis and rental cars are both available for visitors to Aswan. However, both of these transportation options have certain advantages as well as disadvantages.
Taxis are a good way of getting around the immediate city, but if planning on traveling much further, consider another option (see the Trip Advisor Getting Around page) as the fares can get rather high. Fares are based on meters, which should be standard for all taxis, but are not always used. The other option for determining fares is negotiation. Either way, make sure that a meter is running or a price has been agreed upon before beginning a journey. Generally, taxis will be waiting outside of major public areas such as airports, train stations, bus stations, and large hotels. Because many drivers do not speak English, it is a wise idea to bring along a map with the desired destination circled
A personal vehicle is the most convenient form of transportation available in Aswan, as it allows the greatest freedom and flexibility in travel. However, first time visitors to the country should check out this Driving in Egypt page before deciding to get behind the wheel of a car. Some visitors choose to fly into the Cairo International Airport, stop by one of the Car Rental Agencies based around the airport, and drive the 1,000 km south to Aswan. Rental agencies are also available in Aswan.
